Laura Neufeld

4/9/2011

Laura A. Neufeld (nee Christen) age 52 of Kinnelon began a new life in heaven on Saturday, April 9, 2011.  Her passing to eternal life took place while she received the love and caring of her husband Richard and her sister Linda who were at her bedside.

Laura was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she lived her childhood years. Later her family moved to Montvale, NJ where she graduated from Pascack Hills High School with the class of 1977.   She went on to study at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.

After graduation she was employed at Manufacturers Hanover Bank in New York City and then she joined Merrill Lynch Brokerage Company where she worked for twenty years.

She was gifted with an excellent business mind and had a very outgoing get it done personality that made her excel at her work.  In her private life she shifted to being very private and reserved as she related day to day with others.  Both in her business life and personal life she exhibited leadership qualities.

Within her life journey her true dedication was to family and her highlight of life was being a devoted mother and wife.  Laura had wonderful and awesome gourmet cooking skills and originality and variety was always the order of the foods she prepared.

In 1995 she met a handsome fellow by the name of Richard Neufeld at a social event, and after a courtship of about one year they married on January 27, 1996 and honeymooned at Bequia Island in the West Indies .  They were married for fifteen years in a “loving and fun marriage” until her passing.

In her day to day life experiences she loved the beach, enjoyed shopping and was fond of fine jewelry.

Surviving are her loving husband Richard; one daughter Anna and one son Richie both at home; her parents Andrew and Laura Christen of Warwick, NY, her sister Linda DeLanoy and her husband Bill of Laguna Hills, California, her brother Andy Christen and his wife Mary and their family of Warwick, NY; her father in law Dietrich Neufeld (aka Opa) of Winnipeg, Canada; three brothers in law David Neufeld of Yukon, Territory, Peter Neufeld of London, England and Jeffrey Neufeld of Singapore and all of their families.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 11 AM at Our Lady of  Magnificat RC Church,  2 Miller Road in Kinnelon.   Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 PM at the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne.

Those planning an expression of sympathy in Laura’s memory  are asked to consider the Laura Neufeld Children’s Memorial fund, 19 Glen Rock Drive, Kinnelon, NJ  07405

Laur, You will forever be my role model and best friend. You taught me what it was like to be a successful woman in New York while balancing a personal life. Your love, support and encouragement to be the best kept me from returning home to Boston. You have been a true inspiration and have touched so many lives. All of our memories and the life lessons you have shared will carry on with me. All event planners on the street wanted to “be on Laura’s team” and if they weren’t event planners they were willing to change careers just to have you be their leader. Our Angel, please watch over us and stop calling me a dork! Love you to the moon and back. Sar

LA, it has been my privilege to be your friend. I will never forget the many times and memories we have shared - especially down the shore and your "first date" with Dick at Amanda's in Hoboken on New Year's Eve. I will never forget your bright eyes, your perpetual tan, your soothing yet spunky personality, your clam in the storm, your laugh, your life, your love, your light. I will miss you my friend. Enjoy your peace and joy in your new home with no tears... XOXO Do Do

Dick & Linda, Thank you for taking such good care of Laura as she was always taking such good care of us. I feel so fortunate to have worked for her and she created such a wonderful family environment in the office. I know she is watching over us now, having a glass of chardonnay. We will miss her laugh & smile. Lol-lots of love! Love you Laura. XOXO, Kate

Laura, Words can not express what a great wife you were to Dick, and mother Anna and Richie. I told you numerouse times that you were a Saint for being married to Dick. Heaven got a true Saint when you arrived on Saturday. You will be missed in so many ways.

A very sad day for Laura's family, her dear friends and The Pascack Hills family. She was a kind and friendly classmate. A smile and laugh that was infectious, a great sense of humor. Laura, you are missed already. Heaven is a little brighter today because of you.

Dear Christen & Neufeld Families -- I can't thank you enough for sharing one of the most wonderful, beautiful, classy ladies I've ever had the privilege and pleasure of knowing! She was ALWAYS "there" for me during the "Merrill days" and after. If I needed to vent, she'd listen patiently...if I needed advise, she'd give it gladly...and when I needed understanding, warmth, compassion, love and friendship, she gave it all freely! I will always think of these lines from a well-known poem, whenever I think of Laura.."A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best!" With deepest sympathy & love, Marge

Laura was always a pleasure to meet whether at the Beach or in town. You could see how much she loved her family through everything she did because it showed. She was always there for them. I would see her at every event our kids had shared together. My heart goes out to Dick, Anna & Richie as they will struggle with their loss. 40 years ago on April 9, 1971 I lost my mother to a cerebral hemmhorrage and I was only 13 yrs old and the eldest in my family. It is so important now that the families stay strong and always be there for Anna and Richie during their growing years. They will need their all their love and support and to always keep Laura's memory alive. And it was always a pleasre every season to sit and talk with Laura on the Beach to get caught on our families lives. Peace be with her. Karen Kocsis

I was fortunate enough to have worked with Laura years ago during some wonderful times at Merrill Lynch. Laura ("LAC"), I will remember your infectious laugh and great big smile. You were a true professional, full of integrity, a great mentor to those working for you, and always a pleasure to be around. You treated everyone -- from the CEO to the most junior person in the room -- with the utmost respect. You made the office a more enjoyable place to walk into every day just by being there. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Love, "LP"

Laura, I am forever grateful for the years I got to spend working for you. Not only because you taught me so much about business, but more for what you taught me about life. I came to you at a time where I didnt fully believe in myself. You took me in and showed me that I could do whatever I set my mind to, and that I could have lots of fun doing it. I always looked forward to coming to work because of you, and the environment of "family" that you created for all of us. I am so so so lucky to have known you, and called you my friend. May you find peace and white sandy beaches, and feel all the love we are sending up to you. Love,Melissa

So many incredible memories of my high school buddy and friend Laura - driving to the shore in the pouring rain while Laura convinced me the sun was definitely going to come out and it usually did. Her optimism always amazed me... I will miss her infectious laugh and warm and generous nature. God Bless you Laura... My deepest sympathy to the Christen/Neufeld family -

Reading through many of the names & notes left above brings me back to a time when I worked with a group that felt like a family....Although I have great respect for all that I shared our Merrill Lynch office with, Laura in particular was the woman I personally put on a pedestal as my boss, mentor and friend. She was able to balance her professional responsibilities with grace, while taking the time to educate a new colleague on the exceptional attributes of Kistler Chardonnay. I will never forget the glow and joy in her face upon returning from the trip where she met Dick....and the subsequent priority her husband and children remained going forward. I will always miss those times and the great presence Laura's quick step held in them. Your family will be in my prayers.

I consider myself fortunate to have worked with Laura at Merrill Lynch. She was a dynamic manager and personality. She set the bar high but was an extremely benevolent boss. She treated all with dignity and respect. She will be missed. My sincere condolences to family, friends and staff. She is at peace

Dear Laura, It's amazing how much you find out about a person when it's too late. You entered heaven on my birthday...and our birthdays were only three days apart, and we were four years apart. The last time I saw you I tried to give you the sign of peace from across the aisle at OLM this winter, but I don't think you saw me. I gave you the sign of peace today. I am truly in awe of the tributes that are flooding in...in the form of words, flowers, and prayers. Although I didn't know you as well as alot of people, I want to thank you for welcoming me into the Lake Reality Beach community so openly and warmly. Four years ago, my only child, my son Brian, was clinging to my leg at the beach, and both he and me were going through the separation anxiety of the impending pre-K 3. You and I had several talks with our feet in the lake, and with your natural and abundant mothering nature, you put me at ease and gave me much needed advice. You obviously were a success at balancing an exciting career with a fulfilling homelife. I, too, am Italian, a business major, an event professional, a beach and sunshine lover, and married later in life at 39...who would have known...if only we had more time. My deepest sympathies to your beloved family, friends, and colleagues. Every time I look at that spot next to the lifeguard chair at Lake Reality, I will remember you fondly. Rest in eternal peace and happiness, Laura, and know that the Kinnelon community will lovingly watch over your beloved. With gratitude for knowing you, and looking forward to seeing you again, Roberta Lane

As I read these messages that represent all the phases of Laura's life, I am stuck by their consistency. Whether we knew Laura growing up, as family or in social circles, or at work, the message is the same. She was smart, gifted and accomplished, a true people person, a wonderful friend and colleague, and so giving to those around her. Whatever she confronted, she did so with grace, a smile, confidence and ease. Her life was too short, but it was very rich, and we are all the richer for having her as a part of our lives.

Laura, my dear Lake Reality friend. I will miss our Sunday morning talks at the lake, enjoying the sunshine and the quiet nature together with our children. I am European and have never been accepted the way you did, like one of your own. I never had seen a mom teach her children so much compassion like you did. My son is autistic and you made sure that Richie and Anna always protect him and make him feel accepted amongst the other children at the lake. I will never forget that. You had a big heart and just like everygody else said, you made everybody in your presence feel comfortable and special. You touched many people's lifes and will be missed a lot ! Farewell my friend, until we meet again....

Dear Neufeld/Christen Family: I worked at Merrill Lynch for many years. I really felt my career hit an all time high when I finally got to work for Laura. I always wanted to do my best because I knew how fortunate I was to be working for her. I always wanted to do right by her - I was the dork working for the really cool manager. I learned a lot from her energy, supportive & maternal nature, calmness & understanding, emphasis on work-life-balance, and her adventurous love of food, wine and travel. I know she is looking over all of us, sitting in a beach chair, dressed in one of her quintessential floral dresses, pink lipstick, Anastasia earrings, flats, glasses on head, drinking a nice California wine making sure we are all doing ok without her. Laura will be so sorely missed! Lots of love - Pammy/Pamma Jamma/Pam

I was lucky enough to work with Laura at Merrill Lynch. What I remember most about Laura was her incredible energy and zest for life. While Laura has been taken from us far too soon, her love of life will forever be a part of all of those who knew her. We hope that knowing how many people Laura touched, and how deeply she touched them, will bring comfort and joy to those who mourn her passing. We will all miss her terribly, but we know that wherever Laura is, the sun is shining and the wine is vintage.

Dear Laura's family, I only know you through Laura's stories and photos, which we shared every time I worked for her. Since our first meetings long ago in Argentina, until now, I do not remember her once that she wasn't smiling, and her smile was like sunshine that touched everybody around her. She was part of my American family, and I will miss her. My deepest symphaty to all of you, Marta

Laura, I walked into your office when I was 23 and left a different person at 34. You have been such a big influence in my life. I'll never forget the first day I met you - glowing pregnant at the time with Richie. You said to me, "this is the best place to work, you want the job?" How could I resist. Not only were you the best to work for; you were one of the nicest, most caring and loving person I have ever met. I am so priviledged to have had you in my life and will never forget you and our great times together. I miss you terribly.

Lots of laughs with her family, my family and all the neighbors...always so jealous that she could tan so well:-) I see most people wrote what I already knew, what a loving, happy, giving, girl, woman laura was. And has 2 wonderful children with her same smile. I am keeping her in my thoughts and prayers as well as the entire family.. rest easy my old girlfriend..
