James R Hagan
1/24/2010

James R. Hagan age 87 of the Packanack Lake section of Wayne died peacefully on Sunday, January 24, 2010 with the comfort of his family by his side.

Jim was born and raised in New York City then moved to Wayne 51 years ago with his wife Catherine and two daughters Bonnie and Cathy. He became a snowbird after retirement and spent some quality time in Sarasota, Florida before moving back to Wayne.  Jim was a fun-loving guy who loved life and made friends where ever he went. Jim was “the Greatest Dad in the World” to his two daughters. He taught them to “Love Much, Laugh Often and to Live Life” to its fullest. He will be missed by all.  He was proud of his accomplishments and so we would like to share his life’s journey with you.

Jim was born in the family home in New York City on January 31, 1922.  They soon moved to Woodside, Queens, NY after the death of his father in 1929 when he was only 7.  As a young boy, during the depression era, he helped his family by selling lemonade to construction workers, delivering newspapers and cleaning stables.  Coming from an Irish family, he was always proud to call himself an Irishman.  He was known as Buddy to all his friends and family.

When WWII began, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy on October 20, 1942.  While in the Navy he served as an Electricians Mate Third Class on the USS Brooklyn.  He saw action in the invasions of Sicily, Salerno and Anzio, and was discharged from the Navy on September 28, 1945. He was always proud of his service in the Navy and to his country.

Jim was a boxer with twenty-six fights in the ring. In 1947 fighting in the126 lb class of The Golden Gloves he won a medal.  Jim was also a semi-pro pitcher for the Barrel Rollers a New York championship softball team.

During this time, Jimmy also met his soon to be wife, Catherine McCarron, at a “Dollar for a Dance and a Beer” dance where he was introduced to her by his older brother Charlie.  They married on November 7, 1948 and honeymooned in Florida.  They settled down in New York City. After the birth of their second daughter they moved to Packanack Lake in 1958. Jim turned an antiquated house into a beautiful home through all his hard work.  They had a loving, fun filled and devoted marriage of forty-two years before Catherine’s passing on February 19, 1990.

Jim worked at a book bindery, was employed by the US Post Office and then secured a job with the New York Telephone Company, New York City, where he worked for 33 years before retiring in 1984. Jim was a Frame man, Lineman, Installer, Foreman and Repairman. After The fire in Lower Manhattan, he was instrumental in getting phone service back to lower NYC, and received an award from the City of New York. During his working years, he and Catherine also went to real estate school and earned their Real Estate Licenses.

Jim loved Packanack Lake and was an active member of the Community. One of Jim’s passions was fishing.  He was a founder and past-president of the Packanack Angler’s Club.  He was a County Committeeman for the Republican Party and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1931, Wayne. Jim was a parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary RC Church, Wayne.

His favorite place to be, was sitting on his front porch, with a “nippy dippy do”, watching everyone walk around the lake. Many visitors would stop when they saw him. Jim loved to cook, as well as feed everyone that came to his home, and fed many a visiting friend.  This was one of the ways he “bribed” the friends of his daughters to help him put up his backyard screen house. For an Irishman he cooked the best Italian food!

Jim and Catherine were world travelers, jaunting off to such places as: London, Whales, Scotland, Venezuela, Japan, Ireland, Greece, Morocco, Mexico and many islands of the Caribbean. One of the most memorable trips was in 1965 when they packed up the car and the kids and took a five week trip across the USA. There were many stops at old Navy buddies homes as they crisscrossed the nation, stopping at National Parks and tourist spots.

Being a Grandpa was another thrill in his life. He loved being with Brian and Tara and watching them grow up, and teaching them many things. When in Florida, he would call often. He always ended all their phone calls with a “Hug-Hug Kiss-Kiss”

Jim was a snowbird, at first only spending winters, and then eventually living year round in Sarasota Florida, at Glen Oaks. He was active in his beloved community, going to the pool, playing cards, and having fun at the numerous community parties. He had many wonderful friends there.

He was a longtime Yankee fan, and in his retirement watched the games every day. The Giants were his favorite football team.

He spent his last year back in Wayne at Sunrise, and again made many wonderful friends.

He was the beloved husband of forty-two years to the late Catherine (McCarron) Hagan (1990); loving father of Bonnie Luccio and her husband Kevin of Bloomingdale, Cathy Murphy and her husband Doug of Wayne and cherished grandfather of Brian and Tara Murphy; beloved brother of Kathleen Colgan of Enfield, CT and the late Charles and George Hagan, and many nieces and nephews

Friends may celebrate Jim’s life by “The Wearing of the Green” with his family

on Thursday, January 28, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Rd., Wayne.

Funeral services will be held 9:30 AM on Friday, January 29, 2010 from the funeral home and then to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church(across the street from the funeral home) where a 10:30 AM Funeral Mass will be offered.

I was very young, but I remember his love for fishing. One year Jim and Charlie came for a visit at our summer home at Upper Greenwood lake and had all new fishing equipment, that they bought with money won shooting craps. They left it on the dock lunchtime and when they came back it had been stolen. I also remember seeing the two pages of his golden Gloves fight in the back of the Daily News.

Jim was such a wonderful man, full of life, and always would leave you with a joke. The last time we were with Jim at Sunrise, we played his favorite card game Hand and Foot and I was his partner-but Bonnie and Lez whupped us. He was not having a good day, but when we left he made us laugh by making a joke about himself. I have so many wonderful memories of him and know how much he loves his girls, their husbands and grandkids. We were all blessed to have know Jim Hagan and will miss him dearly. Jimmy and I worked together at the N.Y. Telephone co. as Installers. Neither Jimmy or I could stand our Bosses Boss and we always complained to each other about him. We rode in and out, from "P" Lake, on the buss to NYC together.I liked Jimmy and was facinated by him. I had the pleasure of visiting him at Sunrise and we reminissed about old times. I am sorry that he has passed and offer my sincere condolences to his family. God bless you Jimmy and keep them on their toes in heaven as only you can do. Your friend, John Thomas

I am very sorry to hear of The Hagan’s passing. He was a good man who led a full life which is evident by reading the wonderful obituary...where I had forgotten a few things and learned many more. Our family will always remember the good times we all had when our families got together. We loved visiting the Hagan family at the lake where we enjoyed the cookouts, the porch, fishing, playing board games, Indian wrestling and the Clancy Brothers! My good friend Chris and I enjoyed a great Spring Break trip back in 1991 with Jimmy and my dad, where we motored around the Everglades in a houseboat for a week fishing and drinking a lot of beer. It was fun to just get away from it all. I remember only seeing one or two other boats the whole week. We passed the time fishing, talking, telling jokes and playing cards. We saw a lot of interesting wildlife and donated a lot of blood to those mosquitoes. It was a fun trip that produced a lot of great memories. Thanks for all of the good times! -- Sean

Your dad was the nicest man. I never heard him speak a negative or unkind word. Everything he said was full of the great love he had for his girls, his sons-in-law, his grandchildren, his friends. He had a genuine appreciation for the life God had given him, and he was determined to never waste a minute of it! He knew my parents lived in Nokomis, and he enjoyed sharing his Florida stories and adventures with me. I will miss seeing him at all the parties. That's how I'll remember him - sitting in "his chair" holding court! May he rest in peace. You have my sympathies - the great men are always missed the most! Love from Lee, Billy, Conor and Eoin

33 year ago I went to see a new friend at her home, she opened the door and said "hey I want you to meet my Dad". Oh Mr. Hagan it's a pleasure to meet you sir" Oh call me Jim, do you want something to eat? how about a beer, tell me about yourself.... Jim always had his door open along with his heart. He was a very lucky man who has a wonderful family to follow in his footsteps. He was always proud of his family his wife and girls. His own past it's hardships and accomplishments. He showed me to look at things and smile. Through my life I was very lucky to share a spot in his family. To kid around as kids would, listening to his endless jokes and stories of his life. To hold him in days of sorrow. He always had the ability to take life to the fullest, to see the good in the moment. He sits on the porch with his" nippy nippy do" watching the parade. Hey if you don't like it "in your hat" or is it "well what can you". But most of all, not good bye, but "I'll see you on the rebound" Thank you Jim for not only being a "Best Friend" but a "Father" too. Try not to catch all the fish and save me a cold one...with all my love you are missed already....Kevin

My memories are of a very loving and fun family with Jim in the center of it all. I remember hanging with him on 4th of July and passing the phone around to talk to him on New Year's Eve. He raised two wonderful women and his legacy lives on in their loving lives.

Bonnie and Cathy, I am really sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. I will always remember his big smile, handshake and wonderful stories. I can't tell you how many times I have thought of his cabbage line story from the depression and his "three fingered" handshake. He is one of the few people in the world who always brought a smile to my face and I will miss him. Love, Jim

Jim, I write in tribute to your life, your warmth and your contagious smile. I feel so very blessed to have known you for the past several years. Regardless of your pain you always found some source of joy. You always considered yourself fortunate - the luck of the Irishman - to have been surrounded by so many loved ones. That is attributed, though, only to who you are. I will always picture you dancing, with a smile that lit the room, encircled by your loving daughters while sitting laboriously in your wheelchair. I will be wearing the Green with a grin and you in my heart. You are loved and will be remembered by many. Bye Jim

Always a joy to be with "The Godfather"! A favorite Sarasota outing with him was his personal tour of the Ringling Museum. I'm sure he was more knowledgeable about the artists and their paintings & sculptures than any docent! Much Love, Patty Anne

Big Jim was a great family man and friend. I met Jim as Bonnie's Dad but over the years he became my buddy. My fondest memories of Jim were sitting on his porch having a little 'nippy dippy do' and just talking for hours. I also fondly recall Big Jim cheering me on as I chased Bonnie around the lake with a fish in my mouth. I will always see Jim fishing down by the lake, listening to Irish music on St. Patty's Day, taking his reserved chair at 4th of July and playing with the children. Every time I make his potato salad I will think of him. I consider myself lucky to have known Big Jim for all these years and I will surely miss him. "Love Much, Laugh Often and Live Life” Love Ya!

Dear Cathy & family, I will miss seeing your dad at the West Beach during the summer months. He was a kind soul who remembered who I was after only one introduction by you. (while I still struggle to remember some of the names of the "Original Packanack Lakers") I will not forget your dad and the way he easily made me feel welcome here. My heart breaks for your loss.
