The heart of his legacy
her life story

A life defined by family, friends, and learning.

A life defined by kindness, quiet strength, laughter, and an unwavering devotion to family.

Eleanor Margaret Whitmore, 84, of Wayne, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in Paterson, New Jersey, Eleanor was the daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret Sullivan. She grew up with a deep appreciation for family, friendship, and the simple joys of everyday life. After graduating from high school, she began a career in education, where she spent more than 30 years encouraging young minds and leaving a lasting impression on countless students.

Eleanor believed that a meaningful life was not measured by grand accomplishments, but by the small ways we show up for one another. Whether preparing Sunday dinner, tending to her beloved garden, or offering a listening ear over a cup of coffee, she had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome.

"The best things in life aren't things at all. They're the people we love and the memories we leave behind."

Those words reflected the way Eleanor lived. She found happiness in ordinary moments, from family gatherings and summer afternoons at the Jersey Shore to quiet evenings spent reading on her porch.

Above all, Eleanor was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her warmth, humor, and generous spirit will be remembered by everyone fortunate enough to have known her.

Eleanor was predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Robert Whitmore, and her brother, James Sullivan.

She is survived by her three children, Michael Whitmore and his wife Susan, Catherine Reynolds and her husband David, and Jennifer Whitmore; six cherished grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, October 12, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne, New Jersey.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 10:00 AM, followed by interment at Laurel Grove Memorial Park in Totowa, New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a local animal shelter or charitable organization of your choice.

Eleanor's legacy lives on not only in the memories she leaves behind, but in the kindness she inspired in others.
