Andrew “Andy” J. LaSalle age 82 of Wayne for fifty-eight years passed peacefully in his sleep on Friday April 11, 2014.
He was born in the family home in Haskell and raised in Pompton Lakes having graduated from Pompton Lakes High School with the Class of 1948.
Andy worked as a refrigerator and air conditioning mechanic with the Harry Page Company in Paterson and several other firms before entering the National Guard. In 1951, Andy entered the United States Army’s National Guard where he received an expert status as a rifleman. Later during his service he was assigned to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland where he received a certification in track vehicle repair. He was honorably discharged from the National Guard on January 25, 1954 and entered the United States Army as a Corporal. He served much of his time in Fairbanks, Alaska before being honorably discharged in January of 1956.
After his service in the National Guard, Andy was employed by the Allstate Insurance Company in Wayne where he worked for thirty years before retiring in 1995.
He met Dorothy “Dot” when they were in high school but didn’t date until after they graduated. Their first date was sleigh riding down Long Hill Road in Oakland and having hot cocoa at the Hansen House, which is now Portobello’s Restaurant. After receiving permission from her father, Andy proposed to Dot at her family home. They married on September 29, 1951 at the Pompton Plains Reformed Church and had a reception at the North Jersey Country Club in Wayne. They took a car trip through New England for their honeymoon. Andy and Dot celebrated sixty-three years of a loving and devoted marriage.
Andy was a dedicated member of the Pequannock Reformed Church in Wayne where he sang in the choir and served on the Consistory, as an Elder and Deacon, and as Vice President of the Church. He loved to play golf, enjoyed music, sang in the Wyckoff Men’s Chorus for many years, had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed woodworking including carving.
He was the loving husband of Dorothy “Dot” LaSalle; devoted father of Jill LaSalle-Traylor and her husband Barry of Califon, and the late Dr. Jeffrey LaSalle (2009); and cherished grandfather of Rachel and Zachary Traylor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Pequannock Reformed Church, 530 Newark Pompton Tpk., Wayne, NJ 07470 would be appreciated.
