Bernd P. Kayser “Bernie” age 66 of Butler passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at the Morristown Memorial Hospital. His passing was graciously peaceful with his loving family at his bedside.

He was born in Hamburg, Germany on May 16, 1946 just as World War II was coming to an end. His mother would relay the many stresses in their lives at the time one of which was no electricity or heat in their residence. His grandfather had left Germany earlier and he sponsored Bernd’s parents to join him here in America. His parents Erich and Hilde Kayser immigrated in 1955 settling in Haledon. Bernd was nine years of age at the time.

In 1965 Bernd and his parents moved to Wayne.

Bernie’s first job was at the Food Town in Haledon as a cashier. Bernie had also worked in the computer field at Mosler in Wayne, was a computer programmer for Clay Adams and later Becton Dickinson. Bernie retired in 2006 from BASF as a Senior Systems Analyst for 26 ½ years.

He joined the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was part of a special new technology regarding refueling in flight, airplanes. It was his job to aim the pipe on the fuel supply tanker plane into a fuel portal on the nose of the receiving plane that needed fuel.

Bernd was gifted in life with a very quiet personality coupled with high intelligence. Much of his personal education in life was computer oriented and in many ways his interest brought him personal success and much satisfaction in his occupation. His quiet personality would effervesce into joyous communication when he would find people around him inquisitive about computers. He loved to talk the language of computers. He was of the Lutheran Faith. Bernie enjoyed watching soccer games on TV, going for walks and spending time with his family.

He agreed to go on a blind date one evening in 1973 and met a pretty girl named Diane Bucinsky at Anthony’s Restaurant on Route 46 in Totowa. After a one year courtship they joined their hearts in marriage. The final result was that they had a “very loving and content marriage together for thirty-eight years.” “He was very easy to live with and he and Diane did everything together.” Diane’s special name for him at home was “Honsey”.

Bernie was also a loving and dedicated father to Eric who was a very important part of his own personal life journey. “Thanks Dad” for being such a special part of my life.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife Diane (nee Bucinsky) Kayser; one son Eric Kayser and his wife Tristia of Wharton. He also leaves behind a sister-in-law, Elaine Otis & her husband, Charles of North Carolina; two nephews, a niece and their families.

In lieu of flowers memorials in Bernie Kayser’s memory to the Tri-Boro First Aid Squad, PO Box 222, Butler, NJ 07405 would be greatly appreciated.
