Carol P. Wolff, 82, of Pompton Plains, NJ, formerly of Spring Hill, FL and Packanack Lake, Wayne, NJ, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2013. Carol was born in Passaic and grew up in Woodridge. She was the daughter of Stephen and Evangeline Prezkuta and the older sister of Joan. Following graduation in 1948 from Woodridge High School, Carol began to work as a secretary for Young and Rubicam Advertising Agency, commuting every day by bus to New York City. Meanwhile unbeknownst to Carol, a young man named Carl Wolff was commuting with Carol’s girlfriend Doris to their respective jobs in the city. Doris thought that Carol and Carl would make a nice couple so she suggested that they meet each other. They went on a blind date to a dance sponsored by the 200 Club in West Orange with a whole group of friends. Things went so well that they went out again the very next night, this time to a restaurant called The Harbor in Rockaway.

Those two nights in 1952 began three years of courtship that ultimately culminated in Carl asking Carol to marry him. They married on April 16, 1955 and just recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. For their honeymoon, they packed Carl’s brand new 1954 two-toned metallic brown and cream Chevy Bel Air and headed for Key West. Upon their return, the newlyweds settled into an apartment in Rutherford on Montrose Ave. They stayed there for a couple of years and Carol continued to commute every day to her job at Young and Rubicam. One day, some friends announced to Carol and Carl that they were moving to “the country!” It turned out “the country” was Packanack Lake. After seeing it for themselves, they bought their first house at Packanack at 20 Hillcrest Drive.

In 1958 Carol gave birth to the couple’s firstborn, a baby girl whom they named Karen. Baby Susan followed in 1961 and in 1963 they welcomed a little boy whom they named James. The family of five remained in the house at 20 Hillcrest Drive, but Carol was always looking for a “better” house. She ultimately found their next home on the same street and in 1965 they moved into 188 Hillcrest Drive. Carol remained home to care for Karen, Susan and James until they were in school full time. Meanwhile she got involved with Packanack School PTA where she ultimately served as co-president with Carl. She also started attending a brand new Roman Catholic church in town called Immaculate Heart of Mary. Carol regularly attended Sunday mass and also was past president of the Council of Catholic Women. In the early 1970’s she returned to work part time, this time as a secretary for a company called Ucko Machine Tools Inc., in Fairfield. She also served on the editorial staff of Pack-A-News for twenty years.

Her family felt that Carol may have missed her calling in life and that she should have been a real-estate agent. It seemed she was always looking for a new place to live, and in 1980 she found the family’s third new house. Amazingly enough, like the first two houses in Packanack Lake, this one was also on Hillcrest Drive. It was number 131. Many summers Carol, Carl and the kids headed down the Garden State Parkway and got off at exit 10 to go to their favorite vacation spot down the shore in Stone Harbor. Days were enjoyed on the beach and in the evenings they went to Springer’s for ice cream or enjoyed cheese steaks at a place called Bradlees but known to all as “The Dugout.” Of course, there was also plenty of good shopping on 96th Street!

After retiring, 1994 saw a change for Carol and Carl. They sold 131 Hillcrest Drive and headed south. They moved into a golf community in Spring Hill, Florida called Timber Pines. They both enjoyed golf with Carol playing once a week with the women she had quickly befriended. Carol also found work volunteering at Hernando-Pasco Hospice and she continued to volunteer there for ten years. She rounded out her weeks with games of bridge and participation in the book club she started. Carol loved to read, especially her favorite author, Maeve Binchy. While living in Florida, Carol attended St. Francis Cabrini Parish in Spring Hill. Carol and Carl also indulged their love of travel taking many amazing trips. They visited the British Isles, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Monaco, Italy, Vatican City, British Columbia, and Bermuda. They took a river cruise on the Rhone River through France and most recently a cruise through the Panama Canal. They also traveled extensively in the US visiting Hawaii, Alaska, Williamsburg, New Orleans, San Francisco, the Pacific Northwest, and many of the state parks out west including the Grand Canyon.

In 1998, Carol was delighted to finally become a grandmother when her daughter Susan gave birth to Katharine Jeanne, Carol and Carl’s only grandchild. Katharine was even more incentive for Carol to come north a few times per year to visit. In addition to visiting for two weeks each Christmas and a week around Mother’s Day each year, Carol and Carl also continued that long standing tradition that started in 1967 of gathering in the summer down the shore in Stone Harbor. Carol and Carl returned to New Jersey in 2012, residing at Cedar Crest in Pompton Plains.

Carol will always be remembered for her devotion to prayer and to the church, her love and commitment to her family, and for always being available to listen and to offer help or advice in a spirit of love. She had a great sense of humor and a quick wit, and had a love for the written word whether as reader or an editor. Her family and friends will feel her loss deeply.

Surviving are her husband Carl W.; her children: Karen A. Talerico and husband Amedeo of Monmouth Beach, NJ, Susan J. McNaught and husband William of West Milford, NJ, and James W. Wolff of Morgantown, WV; one granddaughter, Katharine Jeanne of West Milford; and her sister Joan Mason of Lancaster, PA.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Carol’s memory to the Lustgarten Foundation, 1111 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714 or online at www.lustgarten.org. The Lustgarten Foundation is for pancreatic cancer research.
