July 3, 2007
Daniel B. Haynes of Lincoln Park passed into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at the age of 31, after a courageous battle with cancer. His death was quiet and peaceful, taking place while he was receiving the loving care of his family who were at his side.
He was born in Baltimore, Maryland and grew up in Ballston Lake, New York later living in Parsippany before moving to Lincoln Park one year ago.
Dan received his formal education at Ballston Lake High School in Ballston Lake, New York with the Class of 1993 and then went on to the State University of New York “SUNY” in Albany, New York where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting with the Class of 1997.
Dan was a quiet and conscientious man, with a profound sense of duty and honor. He was a faithful disciple of Christ Jesus and a committed church member of Trinity Baptist Church in Montville, where his reliability and faithfulness in his responsibilities were an example to all. As his days drew to a close, his faith in the Lord Christ grew stronger, and his anticipation of heaven purer and more earnest. This faith colored all of Dan’s life, and its shades only grew deeper as the shadows of death lengthened. The abiding memory of many will be his quiet courage as a Christian man in the face of death, living – and dying – in the certain hope of the glory to come.
He was a sacrificially loving husband to Priscilla, whom he married May 20, 2006 and with whom he enjoyed a wonderful marriage. He was an attentive and caring son, a faithful friend, and a hardworking employee. He never enjoyed being in the foreground, shunning the limelight wherever possible, but had an eye for the needs of others and the demands of specific circumstances. He was in private what he appeared to be in public. Once his heart had discerned a need, his hand was quick to reach out and meet it, diligent to a fault. Dan was an electronics enthusiast, who would rather build a top-end computer than buy one, and whose near-legendary spreadsheet skills were the object of much wonder (and occasional teasing) among his friends. He also enjoyed caring for his car, spending many Saturday mornings washing and waxing his beloved Honda, until marriage gave him better things to do with his time! In his last days, he developed – alongside Priscilla – a love of gardening, appreciating many quiet hours in his yard as his strength permitted.
A meticulous workman, in the family home his willingness to attempt new tasks, allied with his determination to complete the job well, made for high-standard if sometimes slower progress. He hated wasting money, and turned tracking down a good deal into a complex and often drawn-out art form. Working in mid-town Manhattan, he honed his mind through listening to audiobooks on the bus into the city, and toned his body (and spared his wallet) through invariably walking the thirty blocks from the bus stop to his workplace. Dan’s primary vice was a deep attachment to Gatorade, although after his wedding it was noted that he cut back to several bottles daily.
Scuba-diving was a long-term enthusiasm, but he had also played a little football in his youth. His slight frame did not always lend itself to the rigors of the sport, but this never dented his willingness. He approached everything with a strength of spirit that often surprised those who knew him less well, but which – to those who were closer to him – only revealed the true heart of the man. The demands of the last months of his life did not form his sterling character, but only served to reveal it in ways that were a testimony to those around him – above all, a testimony to his deep faith in Christ, and of the foundations that could not be shaken when all else had been stripped away.
Surviving are his loving wife of one year Priscilla (nee Worthing) Hayn
