Daniel Francis Dowd age 91 died on Friday, October 09, 2009, at the Atrium of Wayne, while receiving the loving care of his family.

Daniel was born in Lake Hopatcong, NJ, and lived in Paterson for many years having lived in Stone Mountain, GA, and Absecon, NJ, before moving to Wayne in 1997.

During his years at Central High School, Paterson, he received a scholarship to play football in college but had to forgo it to help support the family. It was at this time he entered the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and was sent to Utah.

He met his wife Josephine (Tedesco) through family contacts at the dye house in Paterson where he worked. She stood him up on their first date - a mild infraction considering Josephine’s mother caught a man stealing a pig on their farm in Pennsylvania and shot him with a shotgun - but he persisted and they fell in love. They married on July 20, 1941 at St. Michael's Church, Paterson. They honeymooned in Atlantic City. Their long marriage could best be described as loving and caring.

Soon after their marriage Dan was drafted into the US Navy where he served during WWII. During his service he was awarded the European Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, the Victory Medal and the American Theatre Ribbon.

He was a fireman for the Paterson Fire Department for over twenty-five years before retiring at the rank of captain in 1975.

Dan enjoyed traveling with his wife and especially liked the freedom of driving his car. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and relished in their accomplishments. He always enjoyed attending their sporting events as he was an athlete himself. He had a special spot in his heart for babies and little children. Once, during his tenure as a Paterson fireman, he was able to catch a baby dropped from a burning building.

He was the beloved husband of Josephine (nee) Tedesco of Wayne; devoted father of Patricia Falato and her husband Richard of Wayne, Daniel Dowd and his wife Lynne of Lawrenceville, GA, Thomas Dowd and his wife Rae Anee; cherished grandfather of Danette Wood, Brian Dowd, Joshua Falato, Bree Falato, Jason Dowd, and Erin Dowd; much loved great-grandfather of Melissa Wood, Samantha, Dean and Vincent Falato and Jaydyn Dowd; beloved brother Ruth Van Der Weghe of Hammonton, NJ, Helen Casteel of Sparta, NJ, and also of the late Mary Schenker, John Dowd, and Francis Dowd. He was predeceased by his parents, Daniel Dowd and the former Etta Mae Congleton.
