Dolores Yodlowsky (nee Tamburr) died peacefully on September 6, 2023 at the age of 91.
She grew up in Newark, New Jersey, and when Dolores was in the second grade, she decided she didn’t like her name, so she chose to be called Debbie. Her baby brother at the time, Al, had difficulty pronouncing “Debbie” and instead he called her “Dukie.” The name stuck and she’s been affectionately called “Dukie” for the past 80-some years.
Dukie was a very bright girl, self-educated to a large degree, athletic and artistic, often dancing and singing. She was a prolific prayer with a strong faith in God, and she was honest to a fault. She always loved to visit Manhattan and had seen just about every Broadway show that existed. She passed this appreciation of culture and the theatre on to her children as well. As a mother, she set clear parameters for her children, not the least of which included ‘enjoy a cookie, but don’t eat a second one.’
Dukie met her husband Raymond and quickly decided she was “going to marry that hunk.” They were married on May 13, 1957 and enjoyed a reception at the Fiesta in Woodridge. She declared “I’ll be OK as long as I have my little angel with me.” Their love endured for over sixty years before Raymond died in May of 2017, and she has missed him dearly every day since.
Dukie is survived by her three children; Raymond Yodlowsky of Highland Park, Denise DeZao (Mark) of Ramsey, and Dana Yodlowsky (Leslie) of Westwood, and three grandchildren; Danielle, Julian and Layla. She was predeceased by her younger brother, Al Tamburr.
