Doris M. Allen

Doris M. Allen, age 88, longtime resident of Pompton Lakes, passed away on August 3, 2022 in Florham Park, NJ.

Doris was raised in Newark, NJ. She was an enthusiastic student of dance and spent happy childhood summers at the shore. She graduated from Barringer High School where she was a cheerleader and excellent student.

She entered nursing school, but her plans changed when she began visiting her neighborhood friend Joanie, whose family had moved from Newark to Pompton. It was there that Doris met the love of her life, David Allen. Doris and Dave married and raised five children in Pompton Lakes. Doris was a loving and devoted mother, active in PTA, scouts and church activities. Family camping trips were the highlight of every summer vacation.

Doris returned to school, attending Montclair State College as a psychology major. She then earned her masters degree in counseling, earning the distinction of summa cum laude, and embarked on her career as a college counselor. Doris was a trusted and skilled counselor and she especially loved personal counseling and career counseling. She was retired from County College of Morris and was very active in the Middle Atlantic Career Counseling Association, (MACCA). In retirement Doris enjoyed volunteering as an ESL instructor. (English as a Second Language.) Doris enjoyed traveling with her husband David, going on many camping trips and cruises, alone and with family and friends. Sadly, David passed away in 1989, but Doris never lost the travel bug. She journeyed many places, including Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, the UK, Canada and Mexico. She was very proud of her solo trip to Japan visit her granddaughter.

Doris embraced her many life experiences with resilience, gratitude and cheerfulness.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Kathleen (Kate), Donna and her husband Lyonel, David and his wife Jill, Carol, Douglas and his wife Monica. Doris leaves nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and was “favorite aunt” of many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her brother William Hendricks and his wife Susan, and many great friends and colleagues.
