Dorsey P. Conover, age 86 of Hawthorne died Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at the Lakeview Subacute HealthCare Center in Wayne. At his passing he was receiving the loving care of his daughter Holly who was at his bedside.
He was born in Newark and had lived in Hackensack, Rochelle Park and East Rutherford before moving to Hawthorne fifty-nine years ago.
Dorsey received his formal education at Hackensack High School graduating with the Class of 1938.
He was employed as a telephone equipment installer at the American Telephone and Telegraph Company in Hackensack for forty-eight years before his retirement in 1987.
He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II as a Remote Control Gun Turret mechanic specializing in electrical equipment. He received the American Campaign Medal and the American Victory Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 199 in Hawthorne.
Dorsey and Freida Conover had a “good and Loving” marriage together for fifty-nine years. He will always be remembered by his daughter as a very dedicated and loving father who was always there for her throughout life’s many adventures. Perhaps the most important event in his later life was the arrival of his grandson Paul Conover Shumlas who was the apple of his eye.
He enjoyed bowling and participated in several bowling leagues. He also loved to travel with his family, with California the Jersey Shore and the Island of Saint Maarten as favorite destinations.
Dorsey also had a special interest in trains, that continued throughout his life, that he acquired by his many trips on trains while in the Army. In his younger days he enjoyed kayaking in the local rivers in the Rochelle Park area.
Surviving are his loving wife Frieda (nee Mackiewicz); one daughter Holly Conover and her husband Robert Shumlas of Convent Station; one brother William Conover and his wife Marie of Toms River; one grandson Paul Conover Shumlas.
Those planning an expression of sympathy, in proud grandpa Dorsey’s memory, are asked to consider his grandson by helping establish the Paul Conover Shumlas Scholarship Fund, 364 South Street, Convent Station, NJ
