Eleanor Afflitto

Eleanor L. Afflitto, age 79, of Wanaque, formerly an over fifty year resident of Wayne and having spent thirty-nine of those years in the Pines Lake section of the township, passed peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 30, 2021.

She was born in Uxbridge, MA to Harvey and Mary Laney.  She graduated from Uxbridge High School with the Class of 1960. While in high school she was active with both the swim team and ran track. She furthered her education at Lasell Junior College where she received her Associates Degree and rowed on the schools crew team.

Out of school she worked at St Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester, MA as a Medical Technologist and later as a Research Assistant at Mass General Hospital in Boston Massachusetts. After raising her family Eleanor worked as a Long Term Substitute Teacher for the Wayne Hills High School in Wayne.

Eleanor met her future husband Joseph Afflitto when her roommate who was dating Joe’s roommate, set her up on a date. They soon fell in love and married on June 22, 1963 at St Marys Church in Uxbridge, MA.  They honeymooned in Bermuda and had 58 years of a loving and devoted marriage that had been blessed with two children Joseph and Daniel.  Both Eleanor and Joseph’s hearts were devastated when their son Daniel passed away in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack at the World Trade Center in New York.

Eleanor will be lovingly remembered for her gregarious, vivacious way where no thought was unspoken. She was a two fisted Irishwoman from the South of Boston. She was sweet as could be unless you challenged her or her children. Most of all she was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother that will be dearly missed. Through the years she enjoyed golf, skiing, tennis, bridge, and mahjong with friends.

Eleanor was the loving wife of Joseph Afflitto, Sr.; devoted mother of Joseph Afflitto and his wife Lisa of Wayne and that late Daniel Afflitto (d.2001) and his surviving wife Stacey; she was the cherished grandmother of Devin, Nikki, Tia, Joseph, and Daniel; she was also the loved sister of the late Joanne Pratt and the late Marilynn Simmons.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306 would be appreciated.
