Elizabeth F. Omelianuk “Betty” (nee Jobes) age 91 of Pompton Lakes died Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at the Preakness Nursing Home in Wayne. Her passing was quiet and peaceful while receiving the loving care of her daughter Sandra.

She was born in Pompton Lakes and had lived here all of her life.

Betty received her formal education at Pompton Lakes Normal School which was a predecessor school to Pompton Lakes High School graduating with the Class of 1932.

For many years she teamed up with her late husband John and ran a catering business out of their home specializing in large social events. They were regular culinary participants in fundraisers for local charities and political events at picnic grounds such as the former Muller’s Park in Oakland. Later Betty was a cook at the Old Barn Milk Bar on Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne.

She loved to travel and had many trips including Ireland, Scotland, Mexico and Hawaii.

Betty was also quite active athletically and her activities included swimming, roller skating, and on her vacation trips she rode camels and horses. She participated in local minstrel shows as a tap dancer as well as an acrobatic dancer. Betty particularly liked the thrill of hot air balloon riding and would go to South Jersey for balloon rides. On one of her birthdays she spent the better part of a day cruising the sky over New Jersey in a basket suspended below a very large hot air balloon.

She also enjoyed Bingo games sponsored by local charities.

“Mother was always a lady” with a regal nature who took a lot of pride in her appearance and social interactions. She was a person others admired.

She leaves her family with many fond memories of a very loving wife, mother and a proud grandmother who delighted her family the way she made a fuss over them, especially on birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. Perhaps her biggest and most joyous time of each year was making Christmas special for her children and grandchildren.

Betty and John had a “real good marriage partnership” with her children describing, with love, their father as a “great big teddy bear” who spoiled their mother with love. Tragedy struck in 1968 when John had a heart attack and died at the age of forty-eight.

Surviving are two daughters Sandra Bruno of Pompton Lakes and Leslie Zurla of Valley Village, California; one grandson James Bruno and his wife Sandy of Wallington.

Those planning and expression of sympathy in Betty’s memory are asked to consider the Pompton Lakes First Aid Squad, 700 Ramapo Avenue, Pompton Lakes, NJ 07442.
