Evelyn T. Verderame, age 75 of Wayne, died on Friday, July 15, 2011.
Evelyn was born and raised in Harlem, New York. She had a wonderful childhood there which included a lot of dancing. As a young girl, she would cut school on numerous occasions and head over to the local dance hall, including the Copacabana in New York City, where she would dance to her heart’s content. She also had a love of music and would listen to Rock n Roll, Pop music, and especially enjoyed old Italian music which she would play loudly in the house when she was cleaning.
During her childhood, she was a parishioner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Church in East Harlem. The Catholic holiday which of course includes the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, was the big annual event in her community, celebrated every July 16th. This was her favorite event of the year and she continued to celebrate that holiday throughout her lifetime. Sadly, she died just one day before the holiday this year.
She moved to Wayne in 1963 to be closer to her family and became a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of the Valley RC Church on Valley Road in Wayne. She also began working at various bookkeeping and banking jobs before becoming the Assistant Tax Collector in Wayne and retired after a career of more than twenty years there. She had a memory like a steel trap, with no need to write things down. She remembered every ones phone numbers, birthdays, home addresses, and you name it. She had no use for a Rolodex – it was all in her memory.
She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren; jumping rope, and even skateboarding, which she was quite good at. She was an excellent cook of any traditional Italian meal, and she had a wonderful sense of humor. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her.
She is survived by her three daughters; Teresa Verderame, Patricia Farlie and her husband Bill, and Maria Verderame, and three grandchildren; William, Ryan, and Caitlyn Farlie.
