George was born in Passaic where he spent his youthful years, later living in Elmwood Park and Rockledge, Florida for eighteen years until moving to Wayne ten years ago.
Mr. Rothwell, was a Lithographer for American Can Company in Edison where he worked for thirty years before his retirement in 1978. He served as a Seaman First Class in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of The Valley RC Church in Wayne and while living in Rockledge, Florida George was a parishioner of Saint Mary’s RC Church. He was also a Deputy Grand Knight and Fourth Degree Knight at Saint Mary’s and a Deputy Grand Knight at Annunciation RC Church Knights of Columbus Council 11943 in Wayne. He was an active member of the Wayne Golden Age Circle in Wayne. He also was a member and Past President of the Italian American Club.
George loved trips to Atlantic City and enjoyed hobbies including golf, boxing, and league bowling at T-Bowl Lanes in Wayne and also in Rockledge, Florida. In his younger years he was a talented Gymnast and was an accomplished diver having participated in the Passaic Diving Club.
George leaves his family with many fond memories of a very kind and considerate husband, father and grandfather, of beautiful blue eyes and tender strong hands. He gave a lot of himself and even in his autumn years he spent much of his leisure time teaching English to others who lived in his housing complex in Wayne. He had a debilitating event in his life, ten years ago, due to side effects of medicine that caused him to lose his eyesight. Despite that handicap he still played golf and bowled.
