Services
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at 9 AM from the Vander May Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne then to Our Lady of Consolation RC Church, Wayne where at 10 AM a Funeral Mass will be offered.
Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 2-4, 7-9 PM at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Brigadier General William C. Doyle National Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.
Harry Sovyrda age 75, a forty-six year resident of Wayne, died Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at home. His passing was quiet and peaceful while receiving the loving care of his family.
He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and had lived in Little Falls before moving to Wayne forty-six years ago.
He received his formal education at Coughlin High School in Miners Mills, Pennsylvania with the Class of 1950.
Mr. Sovyrda was a maintenance foreman for Malcolm Konner Chevrolet, Paramus for over twenty years before retiring in 1997. Previously he worked for the Clarke Equipment Company in Elmwood Park for ten years.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Consolation RC Church, Wayne. He was instrumental in the building of the original chapel on Surrey Drive in Wayne that was used for worship prior to completion of the new church which was to be named Our Lady of Consolation RC Church.
He served in the Army during the Korean conflict in the 101st Air Born Division and attained the rank of Corporal. Harry received the National Defense Service Medal.
Harry was known for his excellent carpentry skills, his strong will and independence. He was generous with his time and talents and was the first one to lend a hand to anyone in need.
He loved to cook and he was good at it. True to his Russian heritage he specialized in pierogies and kielbasa at one point in time he built a special smoke house in the back yard to fine tune his skills.
He leaves his family with many cherished memories of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was always nurturing his children with love and caring and was always there for them in each of their life’s endeavors.
Harry and Cecilia had fifty-three years of “loving and devoted” marriage together.
Surviving are his devoted wife, of fifty-three years, Cecilia (nee Januszko) Sovyrda; beloved father of Gregory Sovyrda and his wife Cathy of Wayne and Diane Duffen and her husband Andrew of Land-O-Lakes, FL; devoted grandfather of Jennifer Villafana and her husband Juan of Wayne, Brian Sovyrda of Wayne and Rachel Duffen of Land-O-Lakes, FL; much loved brother of Mary Yankovich of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Helene Krom of Manahawkin, Theresa Sterba of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and Ted Sovyrda of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Those planning an expression of sympathy in Harry’s memory are asked to consider the Hospice of New Jersey, 400 Broad Acres Drive, Bloomfield, NJ 07003.
