Hertha Stuhlmann, age 79, of Wayne, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, April 26, 2014.

One of eleven children, she was born in Borstel, Germany and raised by her grandmother. Hertha graduated from Deutsche Bekleidings-Akademie Munchen School in Hamburg where her studies focused on preparing her to be an expert seamstress.

She emigrated to the United States in the late 1950’s with her husband Karl-Heinz. Hertha initially worked as a professional seamstress in New York City where one of her clients was Eva Gabor, star of the 1960’s hit television sitcom Green Acres. While raising her son Karl who was born in 1962, she ultimately worked out of her own home in Wayne as a self-employed seamstress.

Blessed with a real business sense and unbridled energy, in 1978 Hertha set off for Omaha, Nebraska to receive training to become a licensed insurance agent with Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company. She went on to become a long-time consistent top producer for the company. As a top seller, she won many awards and company sponsored trips. Marlin Perkins, zoologist and famous host of the 1963 to 1985 television program Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom often showed up on these trips with his sidekick Jim Fowler to entertain Hertha and the other top sellers with the animals they featured on the program. Hertha never did actually retire and, over the years, her role with the company expanded from insurance sales into investment counseling with Mutual’s subsidiary Pioneer Investments. Known for her honesty and integrity, Hertha was sought out by many for her sound investment counseling.

In her spare time, Hertha proudly served on the executive board and as past-president of the Fritz Reuter Altenheim, a retirement community named for the German author, Fritz Reuter, located on the grounds of Schuetzen Park in North Bergen, NJ. The retirement community was established in 1897 and Hertha was proud of its long tradition of providing a continuum of care from independent living to skilled nursing care, as well as the other amenities that were provided such as planned trips, in house activities, beauty parlors, on premise bank, billiards, ballroom/theater, arts and crafts, computers, and exercise equipment.

Hertha loved many of the activities that were offered at Schuetzen Park including the German-American Volkfest. Schuetzen is a derivative of the German word Schutze, meaning "shooter" or "rifleman", and in 1999 and 2000, Hertha was crowned queen of the N.Y. Schuetzen Outing for her excellent marksmanship with a gun!

For the last seven years, Hertha owned a home in Old Forge, NY which she called Deer Meadow Lodge. She offered the lodge to tourists and vacationers who enjoyed snowmobiling in the winter and the lodge’s indoor swimming pool all year long.

A woman of great faith, Hertha was a long-time member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Wayne. She attended faithfully every Sunday and regularly helped to count the Sunday offering and serve communion.

Hertha is survived by her dear son Karl and his dear companion Lynn Dudak. She is also survived by one brother in Germany and many nieces and nephews and her faithful cat Snugglepuss.

In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy in Hertha’s name are asked to consider Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, P.O. Box 27106, New York, NY 10087-7106.
