Services

The Honorable David A. Waks of Wayne died in his home on Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at age 66, with his family and friends by his side.
David was born and raised in Paterson, and moved to Wayne forty-one years ago. His education began in Paterson at School 20 and continued at Eastside High School, where he graduated with the class of 1958. Dave received his bachelor degree from Rutgers College, New Brunswick, in 1963, and earned his law degree from Georgetown University in 1966.
Dave practiced law in Paterson for 33 years, over 20 of those with his father, Isadore Waks. He served as a Fifth Ward Councilman in Wayne for 22 years, and Mayor of Wayne from 1994 to 2000. He resigned from his mayoral position in the last year of his second term when Governor Christine Whitman appointed him as a Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey. David sat in Paterson from July 2000 to May 2007, serving in the Law Division, Civil Part and Chancery Division, Family Part.
Dave is best described as humble to a fault, inherently honest, highly ethical and extraordinarily hardworking. He was a proud, lifelong Democrat, but always put public service above political agendas. Dave enjoyed going to Yankee games with his children and Broadway musicals with his wife. He was a devoted grandfather and loved watching his grandchildren in their athletic pursuits.
Dave loved his family and was proud of their many accomplishments. He has a vast network of friends going as far back as School 20 in Paterson.
David was the beloved husband of forty-one years to Joan (nee Gordon) Waks; loving father of Joseph Waks and his wife Nancy Slowe of Bayonne, Jennifer Kennelly and her husband Thomas of Pompton Plains and Melanie Graceffo and her husband Gerald of Cranford; loving brother of Jay Waks and his wife Harriet of Larchmont, New York; six grandchildren Cole, McKenzie, and Aidan Kennelly, and Gordon, Gabriel and Isabel Graceffo; and his two granddogs.
Donations may be made in David’s memory to one of the following: Passaic Valley Hospice, 783 Riverview Drive, Box 1007, Totowa, NJ 07511; DePaul Diocesan High School, 1512 Alps Road, Wayne, NJ 07470; or Office of Farmworker Ministry, 815 S. Park Avenue, Apopka, FL 32703.
