John “Jack” Scrivens, age 68 of North Haledon, died suddenly on Monday, July 18, 2011 at home. He was born in Paterson having lived in Haledon before moving to North Haledon thirty-four years ago.

Jack graduated from Manchester Regional High School with the Class of 1961. He later graduated from the McAllister School of Embalming, New York City.

He met his wife Kathy through mutual friends, even though they graduated from high school together they really didn’t know each other then. They had their first date, and that evening’s mail had notice that Jack was drafted into the U.S. Army. He went on to serve with the 616th Medical Company in Vietnam. Upon his discharge from the Army in 1966, he and Kathy became engaged and married on May 6, 1967 at St. Gerard’s RC Church, Paterson. They honeymooned in Montreal, Canada and attended the Expo 1967. They have enjoyed forty-four years of loving and caring marriage.

Jack was the proprietor of Jack Scrivens and Sons Landscaping, North Haledon for many years. He truly loved to work and be in the outdoors. He enjoyed making ponds, walls, loved Ford Mustang cars, enjoyed playing cards, telling jokes, and stories. He is best described as a man who would do anything for you. He loved his boxer dogs, all types of music, travel, but most of all his favorite role in life was being “Pop” to his grandchildren.

He was the beloved husband of Kathy (Flascher) Scrivens; loving father of John Scrivens and his wife Mary of Hawthorne, and Mark Scrivens and his wife M.J. of North Haledon; cherished grandfather of Jordan, Mackenzie and Allison Scrivens; loved brother of Charles Scrivens of Lawrenceville, GA.; dear uncle to Denise, Michael, Cindi, Susan and Patrick; great-uncle of Robbie, Jason, Amy, Sean, Michelle, Joey, and Damien.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 560 Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632 or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Church Street Station-Attn: Tribute Gifts, PO Box 780, NY, NY 10008-0780 would be appreciated.
