Jean M. “Jeannie” Gaviotis, age 80, of Wayne, passed away at home on Saturday, September 26, 2015.

Jeannie was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn.

Jean’s first job was working as a clerk in the Woolworth department store in Brooklyn. It was there that she met her beloved husband Christie who also worked there as a manager. They married on Saturday, June 20, 1953 and enjoyed a loving, loyal, and devoted relationship for 46 years until his passing in 1999. In the early years of their marriage, Jeannie and Chris moved from Brooklyn to Buffalo, NY where they were blest with two beautiful daughters – Lynn and Evamarie. Soon after, they moved to Clifton. As a young mom, Jean served as her daughter’s assistant coach in the Clifton girls softball league. She also had a special love for bowling so she got Lynn and Evamarie involved in that sport at an early age too.

In 1968, Jeannie and the family moved to Wayne. She eventually went to work for Thomas’ English Muffins in their location on Riverview Drive in Wayne. In true Thomas’ English Muffin spirit one could say that Jeannie was very conscientious about every “nook and cranny” of her duties and responsibilities as an accounts receivable manager and new hire trainer for the company. Her family will always look back and smile when they remember how proud she was and how she loved to show them her shining written job reviews. She worked hard and deserved those positive reviews but Jean also had fun at her job and loved the many wonderful people she met and got to work with over the twenty-plus years that she was there until retiring in 2000. After retirement, she kept close ties with many of them by going to lunch or for some other fun activity.

Perhaps the thing that Jeannie was most known for over the forty-seven years that she resided in Wayne was her love of being a vendor at the Wayne PAL Flea Market. It took place traditionally on the first Sunday of every month from October to April and you could count on Jean to be there, peddling her wares. Over the years she developed quite a loyal following proudly referring to returning patrons as “my customers”. She sold a lot of jewelry and cosmetics as well as assorted items she picked up herself at garage sales or consignment shops throughout the year. Jean was herself a master negotiator who absolutely loved and embraced the whole flea market experience. She met a lot of wonderful people through this experience and she just flat-out had a lot of fun being a vendor. She was even registered to have a table at this Octobers PAL flea market and her presence there will be greatly missed!

Besides the flea market Jean was a big fan of a nice steak – especially one from Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Weehawken. She always cheered for her beloved New York Yankees, and she had a lot of fun playing the lottery and going with her friends to the casinos in the Poconos where she usually played the slot machines but every now-and-then got brave and played some roulette.

Jeannie was a friendly, generous and energetic person who was always ready for a party and fun. Her family will miss the weekly calls and participating in activities like going to flea markets and garage sales with her. She adored her two grandchildren Lucas and Erika who she shared lots of love and good times with including a tradition of bowling every Thanksgiving at T-Bowl in Wayne.

Jean is survived by her two loving daughters: Lynn Gaviotis and husband Gary Edmonds of Bedminster, and Evamarie Gaviotis Whitestone and husband Todd of New York City; two adored grandchildren: Lucas and Erika Gaviotis Whitestone; and her dear sister Aime’e Balkjy of Wayne. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Christie in 1999, and her two dear brothers: Joseph Abdalla and William Albert.
