Jesus Aviles, age 50, of Wayne and formerly of Paterson, passed peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2015.
Jesus was born and raised in Paterson. In September, 1979, when he returned to Paterson’s Eastside High School for his sophomore year, he immediately spotted this pretty little freshman named Marisol Rodriguez. For some guys, it might be deemed a problem that Marisol already had a boyfriend, but not for Jesus. He was determined to win her over and he did indeed steal her heart…..right out of the clutches of that other guy. Their first date was to Paterson’s famous Fabian Theater and, a year-and-a-half later while at her sweet sixteen party, Jesus asked Marisol for her hand in marriage, promising to love, protect and provide for her. Marisol believed Jesus and they married on August 19, 1981. Jesus kept his promise and they renewed their vows in 2006 at St. John’s Cathedral in Paterson. This coming August, they would have celebrated 34 years in a very happy marriage with many cherished memories for Marisol and all of Jesus’ family.
After the wedding Jesus and Marisol settled into their new life together and soon were blessed with what would turn out to be the first of five children – a baby girl which they named Jasmine. Over the coming years, they would also welcome Jennifer, Jonathan, Jelissa, and Tiana
Jesus had boundless energy and he found lots of places to burn it off. As a young husband and father, he worked three jobs so that he could provide for his family. He owned his own handyman business and there was nothing he was too proud to do. Lots of his work just happened to be in the schools his kids were attending, and when the kids got a little older, he was asked to coach their soccer teams. He coached for Paterson’s St. George Recreation League and later, when the family moved to Wayne in 1999, he coached at the Wayne PAL. The funny thing is he had never played soccer in his life. He just kinda winged it…..and it worked!
Jesus loved being with his family. His children and grandchildren will cherish fond memories of him dancing with them, telling jokes, or trying to pull a prank. His family gave him the honorary title of “Mr. Mom” because, besides doing all his jobs outside the home, Jesus also did a lot of the cooking, cleaning, laundry…..even sewing, and every year they jokingly gave him Mother’s Day gifts and a Mother’s Day card. Jesus was also the guy everyone called when their car broke down. Triple AAA is breathing a little easier now that Jesus has gone to his place of rest.
Jesus’ idea of a vacation was taking a cruise, and he and Marisol took lots of them. Every year they went on a cruise to such destinations as St. Thomas, St. Lucia, Cayman Islands, Cancun, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, Barbados, just to name a few. Basically, take a look at a map of the Caribbean and Jesus was there! Everyone else had fun exploring, but Jesus’ favorite part of the cruise was getting room service. His last cruise was this past January, with a total of 85 family members and friends.
Jesus adored just about anyone he met, and he certainly had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. He was an awesome grandfather who loved to tell you stories about them or show a video he filmed on his smartphone to anyone who would watch. If his grandchildren asked him for something, he’d always say “Yes you can.” In fact, they wouldn’t have to ask because Jesus was always asking them “Te Sirvo?” which means “Can I serve you?” and he wouldn’t give up until you said “Yes”. An example of how Jesus never said no occurred last November, 2014. One of his granddaughters asked him to go to an event at her elementary school. He wasn’t feeling well but he always said “Yes” and so he went. After, when it was time to go home, Jesus was going to take his granddaughter home too, but the school nurse, who knew Jesus well, observed that he just wasn’t himself. It seemed to her that Jesus was too sick to drive, so in good conscience, she wouldn’t let him take his granddaughter home. Instead, Jesus drove himself to the St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital where later that day, he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Five months later, Jesus joined his beloved family for one more vacation, this time to Disney World. That was last month, and when they got home, Jesus went directly to Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He never was able to come home again.
Jesus will always be remembered as a funny, loud, energetic chatterbox-of-a-man who would talk to anyone if they’d just listen. Always full of stories, he made friends with everyone. He was always ready and willing to help and was loyal to a fault. He will be dearly missed by his family, whom he loved so much, and by all who knew him.
Surviving this larger-than-life man is his beloved wife of 33 years, Marisol; his five adored children: Jasmine and husband Jorge, Jennifer, Jonathan, Jelissa, and Tiana, all of Wayne; six cherished grandchildren: Jenalise, Jiana, Jazzy, Jaylee, Jordyn, and Jay; his dear father Bolivar of Paterson; three sisters: Olga of Haledon, Carmen of Paterson, Marisol of Haledon; one brother: Edwin of Orlando, FL; and his goddaughters: Jayda and Jiji. He was predeceased by his dear mom Herminia in 2013.
