Joel L. Redman, Jr., age 68 of Wayne, formerly of Totowa, passed Tuesday, April 5, 2016.

He was born in Paterson and raised in Totowa. Joel graduated from Carteret Preparatory High School, West Orange with the class of 1966. In 1968, on his birthday, Joel joined the United States Marine Corps. He served, with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, through three TET offensives and was discharged in 1969 as a decorated veteran.

After his service in the Marine Corps he attended night classes for several years at Montclair State University under the GI Bill. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in History with the Class of 1995.

As a young boy Joel worked by his father’s side at the family business, Crews Burial Vault Company in Totowa. When Joel was about 6 years old he would accompany his father to current funerals where his dad would inspect the burial process. As his father worked, Joel would stay behind in the car. On one occasion, Joel wanted his dad to come back to the car so he started honking the horn…during an ongoing funeral. After that incident, his dad would offer him a quarter not to honk the horn while the funeral was going on. For the rest of Joel’s life, he would offer his daughter, and then his grandchildren, a quarter not to honk the horn.

In 1980, after the family business was sold, Joel opened his own business called Atlas Tent, a party rental company, in Totowa which he eventually sold in 1989. Joel then worked for the Passaic County Human Services Department in Paterson for twenty-two years before retiring in July of 2015. During this time, Joel started an import business called Argo Bag, which supplies the party rental industry with heavy duty bags for tents, chairs, and sand bags. The Argo Bag company is still being run by his family today.

He married Teresa Merola on June 20, 1971 at Saint Mary’s Church in Paterson. They have enjoyed forty-five years of a loving and caring marriage.

He will be remembered as a humble, generous to a fault, kind, practical joker, that had a dry sense of humor. He enjoyed making others laugh and would often answer the phone saying “hey you’re looking good.” He never complained and relied on that sense of humor to the end.

He was the loving husband of Teresa (Merola) Redman; devoted father of Heather Antonucci and her husband Thomas of Totowa; cherished grandfather of Matthew, Giuliana, Alayna, and Sabrina Antonucci; dear step-brother of Judith Taterka and her husband Louis of Lafayette, and Uncle to David Taterka, Michelle Morrissey, Melissa Mohr, John Porter, Jr., Christopher Porter and Andrew Giambalvo. Joel was predeceased by his sister, Lynn VanDyke, and his step-brother, John Porter.

Joel was a member of the American Legion Post 227 of Totowa Borough for 46 years and member of the Marine Corps League Lakeland Detachment 744.

In lieu of flowers donations for Prostate Cancer Research can be made in Joel’s memory to the Rutgers Cancer Institute of NJ. Please send donations to C.I.N.J. Development Office, 120 Albany Street Plaza, Tower 1-Suite 305, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 would be appreciated.
