John R. Jacobsen, age 85 of Pompton Plains and formerly of Newtown Square, PA, passed peacefully as his loving family gathered by his side on Sunday, March 15, 2015.

John was born and raised in Jersey City. He graduated from Henry Snyder High School in Jersey City where he was a real star on the track team, earning numerous medals for his athletic talents. As a young man, he also played semi-pro football in Jersey City.

John was working in the banking industry when Uncle Sam called him to serve his country. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War proudly serving from 1951 to 1953, then continuing service in the Army Reserve until 1959 when he was honorably discharged.

John met his wife Dolores while on a trip with friends to Lake George in New York State. They married in New York City on December 29, 1951 while John was home on brief leave from the Army. They enjoyed a loving and devoted marriage for sixty-one years, often the two of them being described as “inseparable” until Dee’s passing in 2012.

John enjoyed a long and prosperous career as a mortgage banker. Most of his years were spent as Vice President of Peoples Trust Bank in Hackensack and, prior to retirement, as Vice President of Central Penn Bank in Philadelphia, PA.

The consummate family man, John especially enjoying spending his discretionary hours with Dee, his two daughters and two sons. He loved to get up early to make everyone breakfast. The family home was located on two-and-a-half acres so there were always plenty of opportunities for activities like swimming, fishing or ice skating with the kids. John also loved puttering around the house and he took great delight and pride in his home, always fixing something on it.

John was a quiet man with a quick dry wit. He always looked for the humor in every situation, in the good times and the rough times too.

John is survived by his four loving children: Linda and husband Lewis Campanaro of Woodland Park, Brian and wife Beverly Jacobsen of Mount Laurel, Kevin and wife Karen Jacobsen of Fairfax, VA, and Patricia Jacobsen of West Chester, PA; eleven cherished grandchildren; four adored great-granddaughters; and his dear brother Robert Jacobsen of Morris Plains.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife Dolores “Dee” (nee Bunyan) in December, 2012.

John’s family is heartily grateful to his full-time care taker Chris Godsent. Chris’ dedication to John’s care was unmatched and to all of them, Chris truly was a “God-Send.”
