John L. Cardaci, age 87, of Wayne, passed peacefully on Sunday, February 21, 2016.

He was born in Lodi and raised in Passaic. Many don’t know that as a young boy John lost his eyesight. His mom prayed to Saint Lucy and promised to honor her each Saint Lucy Day if she would help restore her son’s eyesight. John’s eyesight did come back and his mother, and later John himself, would commemorate Saint Lucy Day on December 13 each year eating a special soup of Chickpeas and Barley in her honor.

After attending 8th grade John had to go to work to help support the family. His father passed when he was just thirteen years old and John had to grow up fast. He was soon delivering newspapers and shining shoes trying to help his mom support him and his thirteen siblings. At the age of eighteen he began working at the Manhattan Rubber Company in Passaic and was a gas station attendant at DeMassi Cadillac in Lyndhurst. He worked his way up the ladder and was picked to be the Service Manager at DeMassi Cadillac's new location in Englewood Cliffs. He worked at DeMassi Cadillac for thirty-seven years before retiring in 1986. He was awarded Service Manager of the Year several times during his tenure at DeMassi. John had a deep work ethic and soon he and his wife Dorothy started their own business called Clifton Wine and Liquors on Main Avenue. After selling the store John found work with the Murphy Bus Company in North Haledon for a few years.

John was a kind, loving, caring man who truly loved his family. He lived for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family and friends will remember his love of gardening with tomato plants, cucumbers, peppers, grapes, and many herbs as well. He enjoyed making homemade ravioli, pizza, sausage, and of course the gravy. His favorite saying was, spaghetti without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing and watching his favorite baseball team the Yankees. He also enjoyed raising chickens, rabbits, and even had a duck for a while. For many years he also played guitar and led a family sing along after dinner on Sunday afternoons.

John was the loving husband of the late Dorothy B. (Caltigerone) Cardaci (2007); devoted father of John Cardaci and his wife Roberta of Holmdel, Michele LaPlaca and her husband Jack of West Milford, Doreen Steinberg and her husband Stuart of Wayne, and Mary Landy and her husband Tony of Wayne; He was the cherished grandfather of fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; dear brother of his twin brother Tony and his wife Lee, Orlando “Butchie” and his wife Claudette, Gabriel Castiglia, Loretta Batista and her husband Angelo, Silvia Caltigerone, Annabelle Pomo and the late: Catherine, Carmine, Susie, Paul, Jay, Philomenia, and Rocky.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the Wayne Memorial First Aid Squad, PO Box 2004, Wayne, NJ 07470  would be appreciated.
