John Matthew Arias, age 20, of Wayne, passed away suddenly on Thursday, February 11, 2016.
John was born in Wayne and had lived there all his life. Already as a very young child John was a great story teller. When he was just in pre-K, he was attending Our Lady of Consolation School. He came home one day with this story about how he and his friend Jack were in the bathroom and there was a mouse running around on the floor. John went on to assure everyone that it wasn’t a problem though because his friend Jack had special gloves to pick up the mouse.
John also was a student at Theunis Dey Elementary School, Schuyler Colfax Middle School, and Wayne Hills High School where he played football for two years as a linebacker for the Patriots. He had played football also when he was younger as a member of the Wayne Hills Boys Club Panthers.
John enjoyed a wonderful, loving childhood with great memories of trips with his family down the Jersey shore at Ocean Beach and nights spent at Seaside Heights. When down the shore, he always loved the way his grandfather would treat him and his cousins by taking them for morning donuts at Donuts Plus. There was also a great tradition of vacationing in the Bahamas with his whole extended family and they always stayed at the Atlantis Hotel which had this amazing pool filled with stingrays. At night, the colored lights in the stingray pool fascinated John and, if he couldn’t be found, that was a great place to go look for him first.
John was also a camper – an activity that he shared with his cousins Jose and James. The three of them were given this love of the outdoors by his father and Aunt Luz. His father was a great role model in John’s life and it was a great loss for him when Dad passed away suddenly in 2009. His father was always delighting in being with John and his younger brother Patrick – hiking, going to the movies and being at John’s sporting events.
John had a sort-of artistic side to him. He was recently exploring this creative side as a culinary arts student at the Culinary School at Eva’s Village. He was also entertaining the idea of becoming a tattoo artist. He was a bit of a clothes horse who would only wear jeans with the finest labels paired with one of his twenty pairs of upscale sneakers. He also had a huge baseball cap collection.
Popular and good-hearted, John’s friends described him as one of the sweetest kids they knew and many referred to him as “Brother.” He always greeted you with a smile and a great big hug and he had the reputation of being willing and eager to do anything for anyone.
John was the dear son of the late John A. (2009) and Lisa Arias (nee Quinn) of Wayne; dear brother of Patrick of Wayne; cherished grandson of Adel and Jack Quinn of Wayne and Adelayda and Tony Sanchez of Neptune; much-loved nephew of: Luz and John Hewitt of Belmar, Kathy Caraballo of Neptune, Jodie and Michael Quinn of Wayne, and Jack and Beth Litman-Quinn of Sarasota, FL; excellent cousin of: Nicki and Stephanie Quinn, Shannon Quinn, Ryan, Jason, and Anna Littman-Quinn, Polina and Victoria Quinn, James Stovall, and Jose Caraballo.
