John “Jack” O’Brien age 78 of Wayne died Monday, October 1, 2007 at the Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains. His passing was quiet and peaceful while he was receiving the loving care of his family who were at his bedside.

He was born in Jersey City and had lived in Clifton before moving to Wayne forty-four years ago.

Jack received his formal education at Saint Peter’s Preparitory School in Jersey City graduating with the Class of 1947. He then majored in Business Administration in his studies at Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City.

He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Serving on the USS Cronin.

Jack served as Township Clerk for Wayne Township for twenty-four years before his retirement in 1997; also initially serving as Urban Renewal Chairman and later as it’s executive director.

He was a member of the Wayne Township Republican Club and the Wayne Elks Lodge 2181. He was elected to the position of Passaic County Freeholder and served from 1995 to 1998. He also served as Wayne Township Councilman from 1978 to 1981.

In his free time he enjoyed golfing, politics and the use of the internet.. Along with his family his many friends will always be enriched for having known Jack as a gregarious, kind and loving Irish personality. He will always be held in high regard as a man above and beyond reproach in all of his life’s endeavors.

Jack was beloved by all who’s lives he touched, especially in political circles in New Jersey, Passaic County, Wayne Township, the Municipal Clerk’s Association and Irish heritage circles.

He leaves his family with many cherished memories of a very warm, loving and loyal husband, father and grandfather. He truly loved his family and found great joy in nurturing them to adulthood and beyond. Jack was a very special father.

Jack and Jean had fifty-four years of “exciting and loving” marriage together. As Jean has said “It was never dull and never boring.”

Surviving are his loving wife Jean (nee Kelly) O’Brien; four daughters Gail McGeady of Wayne, Mary Beth O’Brien of Leucadia, California, Erin DiDia of Studio City, California, Lynn Quinn and her husband Terry of Wayne; one son John “JR” O’Brien of Leucadia, California; eight grandchildren Mark W. Robinson, Jessica, Jennifer and Charles Brady, Nicolette and Dominique DiDia, Michael and Preston Quinn.
