Friends may visit with the family at the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne, on Friday February 5, 2016 from 4-8PM.
Funeral Services will be held at 8:30AM from the funeral home, then to St Mary’s RC Church 17 Pompton Ave, Pompton Lakes where at 9:30AM a Funeral Mass will be offered.
Interment will be in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery Wrightstown, NJ at a later date.
John Philip “Phil” Barnett, age 82 of Pompton Lakes, passed away peacefully at home with the comfort of family by his side on Monday February 1, 2016, after bravely battling ALS.
Phil was born in Lyndhurst, NJ to John and Edith Barnett. He spent his entire childhood in Lyndhurst and graduated from Lyndhurst High School in 1952. While he was in High School, he met the love of his life, Josephine ”Jo” Natoli. They became High School sweethearts and were destined to spend the rest of their lives together. While in High School , Phil enlisted in the United Sates Navy received training in Newport, RI.
After High School, Phil transferred to the US Marine Corp. He served very proudly and bravely defended our country in the Korean War. He was part of the First Marine Division. After seeing combat in Korea, Phil shipped back to Parris Island, SC where he became a Drill Instructor. He would remain a Drill Sergeant until his Honorable Discharge in 1955. It was during his time serving our country that he married Jo on September 5, 1953.
After leaving the Marines, Phil landed a position as a Sales Representative at a company called Air Associates. After working there for some time, Phil earned a position at IBM as a Sales Representative. He would spend the next 26 years working at various locations for IBM’s Office Products Division. Phil had a storied sales career consistently achieving the 100% Club and Golden Circle recognition. Phil retired from his position at IBM in 1987. After his retirement, Phil refused to sit still. He landed another job at a small business called Computertown in Pine Brook, NJ. Phil was great with computers and was more than happy to help anyone who had a problem with their computer.
Phil was an original member of the Marine Corp League, Lakeland Detachment 744 and served as Commandant, Paymaster and Editor until ALS prevented him from continuing. He was also a parishioner of St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Pompton Lakes. He was a big New York Giants fan, loved to watch golf on TV, but never could play the game. He had a love for cars and cherished the time restoring a couple antique cars with his sons. But out of all his hobbies, interests and talents, his true dedication was to his family. Phil and Jo cherished sixty-two years of loving marriage. Phil had a strong presence about him and was always the life of the party. He always remained positive and was willing to help anyone in need. He was strong on the outside but soft on the inside, he was well loved and loved well and was the epitome of Semper Fidelis.
Phil was the loving husband of his wife of sixty-two years Josephine (nee Natoli), devoted father of daughter Barbara Dygert and her husband Jim of Seaford, VA; son James and his wife Lisa of Wayne; two brothers Peter Dunne and Jeffery Dunne, and seven grandchildren Patrick Barnett, Ryan Barnett, Casey Barnett, Andrea Dygert, Elisabeth Barnett, Stephanie Dygert, and James Barnett, Jr; he was pre-deceased by his son Stephan Barnett in 1996 and his two sisters Marjorie Dahl and Barbara Hoskin.
