John Kulik age 91 of Wayne, passed peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 18, 2016.

He was born in Passaic and raised in Garfield having graduated from Garfield High School with the Class of 1942. Just out of high school John was a frame operator for Forstmann Mills in Passaic and soon enlisted in the US Navy. He was honorably discharged on May 10, 1946 with a Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class rank and received the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with 1 Star, and the WWII Victory Medal for his service. John was very proud of serving his country and was often found telling the younger generations about his experiences.

John was a member of the Wayne Elks Lodge 2181 and the Golden Age Circle of Wayne.

He was a dedicated member of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Wayne. He was always volunteering his skills relating to maintenance at the church.

He was a career employee of the Hewitt & Robbins in Passaic for over thirty-five years having retired in 1986 as an Industrial Engineer. While working he attended college at night under the GI Bill and was able to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Rutgers University’s Paterson Division with the Class of 1957.

John met his future bride, Margaret “Marge” Stefancik on a trip to the circus with her Uncle John and his sister Josie who we married. The two sat apart at the circus but made a connection that would have Marge mailing him letters while he was serving in the Navy. Upon his return from the service John took Marge to her high school prom and they soon fell in love. After asking Marge’s parents for her hand in marriage they married at Saint Peter & Paul Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Passaic on February 5, 1949. They honeymooned in Florida and have enjoyed a loving and devoted marriage of over sixty-five years.

John will be remembered as a soft hearted disciplinarian whose bark was bigger than his bite. He was giving, caring, thoughtful, and often emotional. He was the ultimate recycler and often took pallet wood from work to make ornamental flowers and such that he would give away to neighbors and friends. He was a avid wood worker and furniture builder. He loved being creative and being Mr. Fix-It. He had a knack for improvising and problem solving.

When he was 31 years old, John designed and built their home in the Pines Lake section of Wayne. It was a big change from Garfield and being a nature lover this was the perfect spot for them to raise their family. He was active in the Pines Lake community. He loved to fish and could be found "bass bugging" with his fly rod almost every night at 7 pm. John also was an avid golfer and golf ball-hawker. He was the assistant scout master of Troop 107 during the late 60's and early 70's.

He was a founding member of the North Jersey Rod and Reel club.

He supported the New York sport teams and was a real ice hockey and baseball fan.

He was the loving husband of sixty-seven years to Margaret (Stefancik) Kulik; devoted father of Joanne Ferrara and her husband James M. of Port St Lucie, FL, Michael Kulik and his wife Michelle of Kinnelon, and Carol Bencivengo and her husband Peter W. of Flanders; he was the cherished grandfather of five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sisters Josephine Glita and Emily Jacob.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations to Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, 285 French Hill Road, Wayne, NJ 07470 would be appreciated.
