John R. Tomaszek, age 49, of Wayne, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 10, 2016.

Born and raised in Wayne, John was a 1985 graduate of DePaul High School in Wayne.

After high school, John pursued his artistic interests by enrolling in the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). He graduated in 1987 and went on to serve as a chef in various restaurants in New Jersey as well as Oregon, Cape Cod and the Florida Keys, ultimately culminating in the position of Executive Chef at the Grain House Restaurant in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. He received positive written reviews in various newspapers and magazines, leading to the enhanced prestige of the restaurants where his culinary creations were served. He was also featured in a cooking segment on television.

Most recently he was employed as a supervisor with a company specializing in customized, non-slip surfacing. His roles included product testing and application training to new clients, and involved extensive travel throughout the U.S.A., Ireland and South Africa.

John’s two children – Hanna and Mitchell infused so much life, energy, and joy into his own life. He was a doting, proud father who loved to spend time with them, teaching them everything he knew about cooking, and spending great times and making memories together tent-camping at Nickerson State Park on Cape Cod. He enjoyed all that the park had to offer including fishing and swimming. Basically, if an activity included water, John was for it. Day trips down the Jersey Shore were a regular activity they enjoyed together. From a young age, John’s favorite holiday was Christmas and making Christmas wreaths was his passion. The Advent holidays were special to him so it only seems fitting that his birthday was on New Year’s Eve.

John always exhibited an interest in the world of art. He expressed that love through painting, both in oil and water color. This love was something that he shared with his daughter and son and they enjoyed it as much as he did.

John was a wonderful man who enjoyed the love and friendship of many. He was like sunshine in the way that he could brighten any place, event or situation, just by his mere presence. He often entertained friends and family at his home, serving delicious food as only a great chef could. He had an amazing sense of humor and was appreciated by many. He cherished his friendships and was always available if he could help in any way. His infectious laugh will be missed by many who loved him.

John is survived by his wife Jennifer of Boonton Township; much loved children: Hanna Jo Tomaszek and Mitchell Tomaszek of Boonton Township; dear parents: Joseph and Eleanor Tomaszek of Wayne; dear sister Marianne and husband Christopher Cooper of Ayer, MA; two nieces: Catherine and Carolyn; and many cousins. He was predeceased by his dear brother Michael in 2004.

In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a donation to their favorite charity in John’s name.
