Howard John Williams, age 49 of Wayne, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 5, 2013. Everyone knew him as John.
John grew up in Dover, New Hampshire and attended Dover High School, graduating with the class of 1981. He was a stellar athlete and played football throughout his youth into High School. In addition to football, John participated in many other competitive sports often coached by his Father (Howard) such as weight lifting, canoe racing, and ski racing. After graduation, he attended Jacksonville State University in Alabama where he continued to play football. John LOVED college football!! ROLL TIDE!!! His favorite college team was Alabama, and the Raiders were his favorite NFL team. As an Alabama Crimson Tide fan it must be noted that he HATED AUBURN.
As a young man, John loved to cook and prepare meals. His grandmother (Anne Andrusyk) was a huge influence and taught him everything she knew. He enjoyed making her classic home recipes and carrying on her cooking traditions. He earned a Sous Chef position at the Sheraton Twin Towers in Boston where he worked with a highly skilled French Chef. John considered himself a classically trained French Sous Chef but could cook and loved to cook anything and everything! John’s favorite meals to prepare were southern style cuisine and BBQ. He made the best BBQ ribs and he loved to see people enjoying the foods that he prepared. Christmas and holidays were the only time he baked. He enjoyed making his Grandmother’s cookie recipes with Sarah and Steven and sharing the results with EVERYONE. John was famous for his Christmas cookies.
John was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed duck and goose hunting, fishing, boating, and hiking. Over the years he had several Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, all of which he trained for competitions called Field Trials and to retrieve the ducks and geese that he hunted in New Hampshire. He would never waste a shot on a duck out of range or one that he believed was too far away to retrieve. He respected nature and the sport of hunting. He loved all animals and all animals loved John, except maybe ducks and geese.
John was a truly devoted, warm, loving husband and family man. John was the foundation of the family, he was a loyal, loveable, strong husband to Arlene. He was so proud that both Sarah and Steven are excellent scholars and athletes. John enjoyed being a part of his children’s athletic activities. For Sarah he would loudly cheer at Softball games, so much so, Arlene made him go sit in the truck because he was TOO LOUD!!! He coached football and kept score at baseball games for Steven. Both Sarah and Steven ran Cross Country, Winter, and Spring Track. John was their biggest fan! He was especially proud when his daughter was accepted into the Aerospace Engineering program at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. John was also especially proud when his son showed an interest in Art at Passaic Valley High School because his Grandmother (Anne Andrusyk) was an accomplished artist along with his Mother (Lydia) who is an award winning photographer.
John met his wife Arlene when they were both working at a restaurant called “Memory Lane” in Newington, NH while Arlene was attending the University of New Hampshire. They fell deeply in love and were married on October 19, 1991. They spent many happy years in New Hampshire and then Georgia before moving to Wayne in 2006. They have enjoyed 21 wonderful years together.
John is survived by his wife Arlene, daughter Sarah and son Steven, his parents; Dr. Howard and Lydia Williams of Dover, NH, his sister Anne Ormond and her husband James of Dover, NH, his brother Barry and his wife Sydney of Elsinore, CA, and his mother-in-law Lillian Brennick of Haverhill, MA.
