Joseph A. Denike age 78 of Wayne died Friday, August 17, 2007 at the Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains. His passing was quiet and peaceful culminating four weeks of courageous battle with his health. His family, during that time, were constantly at his side giving him all of their love and attention.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York and had lived there before moving to Wayne forty-five years ago.
He received his formal education at Bishop Laughlin High School in Brooklyn graduating with the Class of 1946. He then went to Saint Francis College in Brooklyn and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in History.
He joined the Army in 1951 and served as a Corporal in the First Calvary.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of The Valley RC Church in Wayne and was a member of the Wayne Golden Age Circle and the Seniors Bowling League of Wayne. In addition to bowling he enjoyed golfing.
Mr. Denike was an Office Manager for National Cold Storage Company in Jersey City were he worked for forty years until his retirement in 1990.
He leaves his family with wonderful memories of a very dedicated and lovable husband, father and grandfather. He was gifted with an outgoing, giving and affable personality which caused him to be a delight to be with. He held his own needs in reserve and made it a practice to reach out to others in their time of need.
Perhaps the most positive highlight in his life was the arrival of grandchildren whom he adored with all of his heart and loving them to pieces.
Joseph and Catherine had a very “warm, loving- lot of fun -happy marriage together” for fifty-two years.
Joseph loved sports and besides bowling and golf he was a Mets fan as well as a Rangers fan.
He made it a practice to teach his children how to play baseball and he continued that with his grandchildren. He was a wonderful grandfather. He was always there for his family.
Surviving are his wife Catherine (nee Donlon) Denike; two sons Michael Denike and his wife Barbara of New Providence, Kevin Denike and his wife Susan of Berkeley Heights; two daughters Marybeth Richardson and her husband Bob of Franklin Park and Patricia Spazante and her husband John of Wayne; cherished grandfather of Brian, Rebecca, Kathryn, Jennifer, Jessica, Stephen, Emily, Robert, Michelle and Shannon.
