Joseph L. Damato, age 79 of Manahawkin and formerly of Upper Montclair, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. Joe had lived in Upper Montclair from 1964 until retiring to Manahawkin, NJ in 2000.

Joe was raised in Newark and graduated from Seton Hall Prep High School with the class of 1952. He went on to earn his degree from Seton Hall University in 1956. He proudly holds a spot in the Seton Hall University “Hall of Fame” for his basketball skills. He was also an excellent second baseman on the Seton Hall Pirates baseball team.

After graduating from Seton Hall University, Joe attended Wisconsin University Graduate School of Bank Marketing and Northwestern University School of Bank Public Relations. Joe then began his financial career with Manufacturers Hanover Trust. He was recruited by the East Manhattan Chamber of Commerce and loved going to New York City every day. He eventually started his own consulting firm, JLD Marketing Resources of Upper Montclair, from which he retired in 2000.

Joe was an active member of the Clifton UNICO for many years and very proud of his Italian heritage. He was a naturally social guy and had a wonderful talent for remembering people’s names. He simply never forgot a name. He was sincere when asking “how are you?” and truly interested in knowing how things were going in your life. He was the family ‘ambassador’. Joe’s family was very important to him and he always kept in touch with his daughters; he loved seeing how their careers were going and making sure they were happy. His daughters meant the world to him and he spoke with them nearly every day.

Joe was always an avid swimmer, loved the water, and had been a lifeguard in his teens. While living in Upper Montclair, Joe swam in his pool every morning that he could before going to work. His family vacations were always to the beach; Beach Haven and North Beach, on LBI, where he would swim each day. When it came time to retire, finding an appropriate place was easy; Manahawkin was close to the ocean and dear to his heart. He and Joan would make daily trips to the beach and he would swim each day that he could, as recently as this past summer. Joe was also a regular on the golf course, a big New York Yankees and New York Giants fan.

Joe and Joan were married on September 15, 1962 and enjoyed 50 wonderful years together. Joe is survived by his devoted wife Joan of Manahawkin, his three daughters; Susan Tomsky and her husband Craig of Clinton Township, NJ, Nancy Damato-Tarasco and her husband Joseph of Cold Spring, NY, and Lori Giardino and her husband Steven of Wayne, five grandchildren; Marisa, Eric, and Jenna Tomsky of Clinton, Nicole and Alyssa Giardino of Wayne, his sister Ferne Mutone Cinque of Clifton, and his dear sister-in-law; Dorothy Martin of Southold, NY.

Donations in Joe’s memory, if friends so wish, would be greatly appreciated. Please consider the Meridian Hospice, 1340 Campus Parkway, Wall Township, NJ 07753 or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, P.O. Box 27106, New York, NY 10087-7106.
