Kathleen T. Butler, 98, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 26, 2026 surrounded by her loving family.
Kathleen was born in Passaic and raised by Oscar and Kathleen (Gorman) Lawson in Belleville. She grew up alongside her brothers Jack and Dick. The three were a tight knit group. The family later moved to Clifton, and Kathleen graduated from Clifton High School. She was an excellent student and attended a renowned secretarial school in New York City. Upon graduation, Kathleen worked as a steno typist in the city. When she made a career pivot and took a head secretarial job at the American Tag Company in Belleville, she met her future husband, Robert Butler. They married on January 20, 1951 at St. Andrew’s RC Church in Clifton and enjoyed over 40 happy and unconditionally supportive years together, raising two daughters, until Robert’s passing in 1993.
Kathleen was an extraordinarily dedicated mother and homemaker, taking excellent care of her family. In later years, GG doted on her grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren. She was also a great and compassionate friend, helping anyone who needed her. Kathleen was a founding member of Our Lady of Consolation RC Church in Wayne.
She is survived by two devoted daughters, Kathleen Butler-Hopkins (John) of Pocono Pines, Pennsylvania and Butler, New Jersey and Patricia Hromy (John) of Downingtown, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Caroline Hromy (PA), Christopher (Fiona-Ireland), Bryant (VA) and Patrick (MO) Hopkins; and four great grandchildren, Jack, Leo, Teidi and Senan Hopkins, all in Ireland.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert Butler, parents Kathleen and Oscar Lawson, and brothers John and Richard Lawson.
