Leo Garlick, age 91 of Pequannock died peacefully on Saturday, April 26, 2014. Leo and his wife Dorothy (1999) had moved to Pequannock in 1947.
Leo was born in Everett, PA and raised in Roaring Springs, PA. Sadly, his mother passed when he was just eighteen years old and shortly thereafter he moved to New Jersey. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and shipped off to Europe. Leo’s unit was involved in several major campaigns including the Ardennes forest, Rhineland and throughout Central Europe. He was wounded while fighting in Luxemburg, earning a Purple Heart, and after a brief recovery; he went right back to join his unit. He was discharged in 1946 and couldn’t wait to come home to his beloved wife Dorothy.
Leo had met his wife Dorothy when he first moved to NJ. They were married on May 10, 1944 while he was home on leave. After he returned home the second time, they moved out to Pequannock, settled down and raised their family. They became members of the Pequannock Reformed Church where Leo served as an Elder within the Consistory. He and Dorothy were truly devoted to one another, enjoying fifty five years together before Dorothy passed in 1999.
Leo became a painter with Local Union 1004 out of Newark. He retired from painting in 1984 at the age of 62. During his retirement, he loved working in his shop at home and tending to his garden.
Shortly after moving to Pequannock, he joined the Pequannock Engine Company #2 where he later became the President and one of their longest serving members. He loved the fire department and the wonderful, lifelong friends he made there over the years. Dorothy also got involved and joined the women’s auxiliary of the fire company. The fire house became like a second home, and the members were an extension of their family.
Leo is survived by his three children; Wayne Garlick and his wife Betsy of Surfside Beach, SC, Cheryl Fox and her husband Ron of Oak Ridge, NJ, and Denise O’Connor and her husband Michael of Toms River, NJ, one sister-in-law; Irma Garlick of Bedford, PA, nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy in 1999, and by all four of his siblings.
In lieu of flowers, if you choose, please contribute to either Pequannock. Fire Co. #2 or Pequannock Reformed Church of Wayne NJ, in Leo Garlick’s name.
