Funeral services will be held 6 PM on Monday, June 18, 2007 at the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, June 18, 2007 from 3 – 6 PM at the funeral home.
Martin McKay age 70 of Murrells Inlet, SC, formerly of Wayne, NJ died Thursday, June 14, 2007 at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, PA.
He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and came to this country in 1962 settling in Wayne where he lived for thirty years before moving to Murrells Inlet, SC eight years ago.
Martin was the loving son of Thomas and Mary(McLoughlin) McKay.
He graduated from the Glenwood High School, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
He was the All Ireland Cycling Champion and held the title of “Fastest Man in Ireland” for one year in both road and track cycling. He represented Ireland in the 1960 Olympics held in Rome.
Mr. McKay was a machinist for the Phillips Lighting Corporation, South Plainfield for thirty years having retired in 1998.
He was a founding member and served on the Board of Directors of the Grand Strand Golf and Travel Club of Myrtle Beach, SC. In Murrells Inlet, SC, Martin was a member of the Elks Club, Moose Club and the local Ski and Outing Club. He was also a member of several cycling clubs in Ireland.
Martin will be remembered as an extremely gentle, loving and caring man. He was very proud of his family, his personal achievements, and often talked about his loving parents. Martin had a passion for golf and travel and enjoyed and had a wonderful sense of humor that was evident even in his final days.
Loving companion of Rose Papaioannou; beloved father of Erica Worell and her husband Brian of Wayne and Martin J. McKay and his wife Ann of Wayne; cherished grandfather of Aidan Martin McKay of Wayne; much loved brother of Tom McKay of Wayne, Isabel Smith and her husband Hilton, Harry McKay and his wife Kathleen and Sam McKay and his wife Vicki all of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations, in honor of Martin's sister Isabel, can be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Assoc. of America, 706 Haddonfield Rd., Cherry Hill, NJ 08002 would be appreciated.
