Mary “Ciss” Schramm ( nee Lernihan ) age 97, formerly of Wayne for over fifty years, passed peacefully at home in Cedar Crest on Dec. 26th.
Born in N.Y.C. to Mathias and Mary Mariah Lernihan in 1920, Ciss' family relocated five years later to the Middle Village section of Queens, New York. There, along with her brothers Jack and Matt, she attended St. Margaret's grammar school, and later graduated from Our Lady of Wisdom Academy High School with the Class of 1938. After high school she continued her education by completing secretarial school.
Ciss met the love of her life, George J. Schramm, while growing up in Middle Village, where they attended the same grade school, and were both active parishioners at Saint Margaret's RC Church in Queens. It was there, after Sunday mass, that George first invited Ciss out for an ice cream soda, which eventually lead to the two of them falling in love. They married on January 16, 1943 while George was home on furlough from Army basic training. He was deployed to the European Front during WWII.
While praying for and awaiting his safe return, Mary commuted (via trollys and trains) to Manhatten from Middle Village, where she developed a love of the law while working as an executive legal secretary.
When George returned from the war, they settled into an apartment in the Flushing section of Queens, New York, and in 1947 they welcomed their first child. In 1951 they moved to River Edge, NJ, where two more children joined their family. In 1957 they relocated again, so as to raise their family in what was, at the time, "the country", at Packanack Lake in Wayne, NJ. Then, in 1980, as "empty nesters", they moved across Wayne to Manitou. After George’s passing in 2008, Ciss moved to Cedar Crest in Pompton Plains, where she has lived for the past nine and a half years.
Ciss will be lovingly remembered for her gracious manner, strong values, wise counsel, and devout faith. Although a private person, it was no secret to anyone who knew her well that she had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother, and, much like her husband, was never without her rosary.
Ciss also loved to sing. For over 30 years, she was a member of the award-winning Ramapo Valley Sweet Adeline's chorus, where she had the pleasure of experiencing standing ovations at every venue in many cities, including Carnige Hall in NYC and the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Having an appreciation and knack for fashion, Ciss would make dresses for her girls when they were little, and was known for always looking "put together". She had a gift for innovation and loved decorating. Consequently, she enjoyed finding just the right placement for everything in her home, including her beloved collection of dolls and carefully chosen antiques.
The sea was another of her great loves; she enjoyed many a family vacation at the Jersey Shore, as well as wintering near the Florida coast after George retired. Her children and grandchildren also fondly remember her gift to them of the '97 ocean cruise to Bermuda.
Along with her husband George, Ciss enjoyed golfing, and was a founding member of the Packanack Lake Golf Club in Wayne. There they both developed and enjoyed lasting friendships fostered during many rounds on the course.
For many years they spent their weekends in the Pocono Mountains, where Ciss cherished the peace, natural beauty, and abundant wildlife. She especially enjoyed watching the deer quietly walk through the woods, and the many and varied birds that would visit her hanging geraniums and dine at her bird feeders.
Still sharp as a tack on her 97th birthday, Ciss stayed on top of world events by watching news every night. When she would change the channel, it would often be to QVC, for she did also love to shop.
The innocence and antics of little children always made her beautiful blue Irish eyes smile. But conversely, her heart would really ache for any child in need which is reflected in the Foundation referenced below.
Along with her enduring faith, her greatest love of all was the love she had in her heart for her family.
Ciss was the wife of sixty-five years to the late George J. Schramm (2008); mother of Gregory J. Schramm (Greg) of Wayne, Jacquelyn M. (and Jehovenn Honculada) Schramm of Wayne, and Mary-Therese Schramm (Tracy) of Pompton Plains. She had five grandchildren: Geoffrey (and Michelle) Schramm, Amy (and Chris) Adickes, Timothy (and Tracy) Schramm, Jehda (and Ken Hermanny) Honculada, and Jessica (and Frank Troia) Honculada. She had eight great-grandchildren: Kayla Schramm, Ryan Schramm, Jake Adickes, Dylan Adickes, Grady Schramm, Wesley Hermanny, Sophie Schramm and Gavin Hermanny.
She will continue to be deeply loved and will be missed beyond measure. Please remember her in your prayers.
