Her family will gather to remember and celebrate her life at Vander May Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne on Thursday, June 7, 2012. Visitation will take place from 7-8 PM with an 8 PM service all at the funeral home.
Mary Patterson, age 97, of Hackensack died peacefully on Sunday, June 3, 2012. Mary was born in West New York, New Jersey and was a resident of Hackensack, NJ for the last 25 years.
Her Father Michael Chiurazzi Arrived in the United States on August 11, 1897. He left from Naples Italy on the Ship Victoria. Her Mother Giuseppina Mercante arrived in the United States on April 10,1908. She left from Naples Italy on the ship Venezia.
She was married to the late Raymond Patterson (1995) and is survived by her three children, Robert Patterson and his wife Gayle of Wayne, Patricia Stein and her husband Mark of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Raymond Patterson, Jr. of Kissimmee, FL; cherished grandmother of Kelly O’Brien and her husband Chris, Ryan Patterson, Richard Stein and his wife Doreen, Raymond Patterson, Sean Patterson and his wife Amy, Steven Conti and his wife Samantha, Robert Conti and his wife Sol; devoted great-grandmother of Christian O’Brien, Noelle O’Brien, Kristopher Stein, Melody Stein, Cory Patterson, Alexis Patterson, Hope Patterson and Kyle Patterson.
Mary loved playing Bingo and could often be found at the Maywood, Hackensack, Garfield, and Lodi senior centers trying her luck. She was a great cook and baker. Her special touch on traditional Sicilian recipes will be greatly missed. A family favorite is her Spinach Pie…we have included her recipe below to keep her memory alive.
Mary will always be remembered for her generosity, kindness, sense of humor, honesty and graciousness. She as the nucleus of her family and touched the lives of many. She will be missed greatly.
She met her husband at the Lipton Tea Factory in Hudson County New Jersey and they married on May 31, 1941 at St. Joseph’s of the Palisades RC Church in West New York. They enjoyed fifty-one years of loving marriage until Raymond’s passing in October of 1995.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the Compassionate Care Hospice, 400 Broadacres Drive #1, Bloomfield, NJ 07003 would be appreciated.
Mary's Spinach Pie
1- Box Hot Roll Mix
1- Bag of Baby Spinach
1- Bag shredded Mozzarella Cheese
Grated Parmesan Cheese
Olive Oil

Take Hot Roll Mix/Substitute 2 Tablespoons olive oil for margarine
Mix and let rise in covered bowl
Once Hot Roll Mix has risen roll out to rectangle approx 12 X 10
Rinse Spinach & de stem then pat dry
Cover with Spinach, Add Grated Parmesan and Mozzarella Cheese
Add Salt..Pepper and Oregano all to taste...not to liberally
Drizzle Olive Oil then roll like a jelly roll and place in a pan or on cookie sheet seam side down. If it doesn't fit shape into a crescent .......brush whole outside with olive oil using pastry brush.
Also coat bottom on pan or cookie sheet "lightly" with olive oil.
Bake uncovered till brown about 20 minutes at 350 Degrees
(Variation is shred 3 or 4 carrots and add in with spinach)
