Michael D’Amore

Michael P. D’Amore, age 87 of Woodland Park, died peacefully on Thursday, May 16, 2019 with his family gathered at his bedside.

Born in Newark, Micky was one of eleven children in his family, living in a home on Gobel St.  He got his first job shining shoes as a teenager.  At seventeen, he started driving a truck delivering chickens before taking a driver’s test at Colonial Concrete in Newark. That job lasted for forty-eight years and he retired in 1996 at sixty-five years old.

Micky took a great deal of pride in his grandchildren. Poppy, (as they called him) would drop whatever he was doing to attend to them. He has instilled values and unconditional love that have been ingrained in them forever .He also loved spending time at the Meadowlands Race Track betting on the horses with his brother Nate and going to Atlantic City with his sister, Rachael.

Micky met his wife, Irma Trozzo, while on a cruise.  He called her the day after getting home from the cruise and took her on their first date to the North Arlington Diner. They wed on April 29, 1962 at St. Patrick’s Church in Astoria, Queens and honeymoon to the Fountainebleau Hotel in Miami.  In 1965, Micky and Irma moved to West Paterson (now Woodland Park), and they have lived happily there ever since.  They have enjoyed fifty-seven years of marriage, watching their family grow all along the way.

Michael  is survived by his loving wife Irma of Woodland Park, two daughters; Maria Schweighardt and her husband Tom of Wayne, Michelle D’Amore and her husband Frank Ponzo of Wayne, six grandchildren; Michael, Jonathan, and Nicole Joachim, Kristen Marshall and her husband David, Katelyn Schweighardt and her fiancé Maxx Lepselter and Thomas Schweighardt, two step-grandchildren; Dillon Ponzo and Candace  Laskowski and her husband Stephen, a great-granddaughter; Kennedy Rose Marshall, and two step-great-grandchildren; Parker and Ashton Laskowski.  Micky is also survived by two of his siblings; Rachael Davis and Sadie Leonardo.  He was predeceased by three sisters; Mary Ancmon, Rose Dasaro, and Vinnie Uliano Smorra, and by five brothers; Carmine, Patrick, John, Joseph, and Nathan.
