Nicholas John Cannizzaro, age 81, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2020. He was born on February 5, 1939 in Carlstadt, New Jersey to Nicholas and Hazel. He attended Paterson schools and, at the age of 17, Nick enlisted in the United States Army. However, he was discharged five months later on an honorable hardship to help support his family. A few months later, Nick’s brother introduced him to Janet and they were married the following year. Janet was Nicholas’ true love of his life; this was evident to everyone that was lucky enough to know them. Together they had four children, Nicholas and his wife, Viviana, Dianne and her husband Salvatore Giardina, Craig and his predeceased wife Linda, and Christopher and his wife Melissa; grandchildren, Alyssa and Vincent Gareffa, Stephanie, Salvatore, Natalie, and Aiden. He was predeceased by his brothers, Peter Cannizzaro and Donald VanHouton, and survived by his brothers William Cannizzaro, Neil VanHouton, William VanHouton and John VanHouton.
Nick was a truck driver for Wallen Chemical, Brown Chemical and lastly North Jersey Tank Line. He was someone who dedicated 110% to whoever he worked for; this hardworking characteristic shone through until his very last breath. He was always so strong and inspiring.
Nick was so much more than just his hard work though. He loved to travel and explore different places; experiencing life and sharing that with his family. His hobby included his passion for old cars. Buying and restoring, and then showing off his “toys” was something that brought a huge smile to his face. He loved to watch and cheer for (sometimes scream at) the Yankees, but most of all he loved spending time with his family. He was a son and brother who made sure that everyone was taken care of; he was a dedicated father that provided the best life for his four children; Nick was a devoted grandfather, who sometimes acted like he was one of them, which always made the grandchildren laugh. However, his most treasured joy was his wife Janet, and seeing the life they have created together play out in front of him. Their love for each other will never die and will continue to live on in the family who he left behind.
Psalm 23: The Lord Is My Shepherd
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
