Nora T. Burke (nee Ruane) age 70 of Packanack Lake, Wayne, NJ died Sunday, September 3, 2006 at the Saint Joseph’s Wayne Hospital in Wayne. She died quietly and peacefully with her loving family at her side.
She was born in Castle Bar, Mayo, Ireland and came to the United States in 1956 first settling in Jersey City before moving to Packanack Lake in Wayne thirty-eight years ago.
She received her formal education in the Castle Bar, Ireland school system graduating with the Class of 1953.
Her first employment was as a Secretary for New York Telephone Company where she worked from 1956 to 1962. She later became an assistant at the Immaculate Heart of Mary RC Church for nine years and finally retiring in 1984.
Nora’s hobbies included reading, walking and especially square dancing.
She will always be remembered for her beautiful blue eyes and warm smile.
Her personality was one of kindness and generosity to all. She was especially adept at story telling about Ireland and the latest Irish news.
Her family’s fondest memories include vacations on Long Beach Island. She also enjoyed going to Packanack Lake and watching the kids swim. She worried about their swimming because she could not swim herself and somehow felt she was protecting them by being there.
She loved her children with all of her heart and her concerns would often consume her with fear and trepidation. Nora’s greatest joy and also her greatest dose of anxiety was raising three rambunctious sons, never knowing what was next in their adventures in life. At a later stage in their lives when they themselves had children they in turn began to realize what they had put their mother through.
One of Nodie’s, her pet Irish name, greatest joys was inviting her Irish friends and relatives to her home and entertaining them. They had wonderful times together that will always be remembered.
Surviving are her loving husband of forty-four years Thomas J. Burke, three sons Michael Burke of Pompton Lakes, Peter Burke and his wife Annie of Erie, Pennsylvania, Thomas Burke and his wife Natalie of Palm Bay, Florida; two sisters Babby Kenny of West Meath, Ireland and Mary Canavan and her husband Pat of West Orange, NJ.
She was predeceased by her parents at a young age John and Nora Ruane and her uncle Pat Moran and his wife Maria raised her to adulthood. Her sisters Rosie Flannery and Bridget Ruane died earlier as did her two brothers John Joe Ruane and Michael Ruane. Her brother in law Ben Kenny also predeceased her.
Those planning an expression of sympathy, in Nora’s memory, are asked to consider Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Center for Cancer Research, 1274 York Avenue, New York, NY 10021.
