Catharine Geiger of Morristown, age 101, died on Sunday, October 14, 2007. She passed quietly and peacefully with her devoted caretaker, Violet Graham, by her bedside.
She was born and raised in Paterson, NJ and graduated the twelfth grade from the Paterson Normal School in 1924. She spent many of her years working in the Paterson Silk Industry for various major firms. She met her husband, Charles, at work and they married in 1937. In 1948 they moved their whole family to Hemlock Estates in Hawley, PA. Charles passed in 1980 while they were living in Hawley, and Catharine had to teach herself how to drive in order to continue living in such a remote area. She eventually moved in 1988 to Morristown, NJ to be closer to her son, Chuck.
She was a benevolent woman, devoting much of her time to many causes such as the United Way, American Red Cross, Community Chest, and the Family Counseling Center of which she is a past president. She received the “Woman of the Year” award in 1957 from the City of Paterson for her volunteer work.
Catharine was also devoted to her family. Her son recalls her being very focused on their wellbeing and their education. She and her husband worked tirelessly in order to put their children through the best schools – sending them to John’s Hopkins, Columbia, and The University of Syracuse.
Surviving are one son, Chuck of Morristown, one daughter, ‘Gee Gee’ of Palo Alto, CA; two grandchildren, Gary Stephen Geiger of Napa Valley, CA and Jody Kalmbach and her husband Chris of Florida; one great grandchild, Clayton Kalmbach of Florida and one more great-grandchild expected soon. Also one brother-in-law, Robert Sherwood of Wayne, one niece, Kathy Sherwood of Wayne; and one nephew, Robert Sherwood of Wayne.
Catharine is predeceased by all of her four younger siblings, her husband Charles in 1980, and her son George in 1978.
