Raymond Charles Lender
It is with great sadness that we share that Raymond C. Lender of Wayne, age 98, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026.
Raised in Newark, Raymond was the youngest of three boys born to Monica and Herman Lender. After graduating high school from Westside High School, he enlisted in the United States Army. Raymond was stationed in Japan during the American occupation in the late 1940s. After his honorable discharge, Raymond continued his education at Rutgers Newark while remaining in the Army Reserves.
While working at PSE&G part-time as a delivery boy, he met the love of his life, Dorothy “Dee” Haas, who worked tabulating the books he was delivering. They were married on March 26, 1949. A year later, he was called into active combat for the Korean War where he was shot in the head in the line of duty. After jumping on a nearby Jeep, he arrived at a MASH unit where he received treatment. After his hospital stay in Tokyo he was shipped back at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC. Dee visited him every weekend for the next year. He received the Purple Heart for his service.
Upon his second discharge, Ray finished his degree in accounting from Rutgers and went on to work at Johson and Johnson, National Starch, and Stanley Chemical as a comptroller. When the family was living in Edison, Ray and Dee welcomed their children, Monica and Raymond. After several job transfers, the family moved into their house in Packanack Lake in Wayne in 1965, where Raymond and Dee lived until 2022.
While in Packanack Lake, Ray became a founding member of the Packanack Lake Golf Club. He spent many afternoons and weekends on the golf course and taking on active roles in the organization such as treasurer. It wasn’t until one week after he turned 90 that Ray finally got his long sought-after hole in one at the Packanack Lake golf course.
Upon his retirement Ray took an active role at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Wayne, where he served as financial secretary and treasurer. He was also a proud member of the “Monday Morning Crew” which took care of the property and the upkeep of the church. Ray also volunteered at Wayne Public library for many years.
Raymond was always a presence in both his children’s and grandchildren’s lives, from sporting events to band concerts. He had a love for classical music, attending many concerts with his grandson, Eric.
Raymond was predeceased by his loving wife of 73 years, Dorothy “Dee” Lender, as well as his two brothers, Herman and Robert, and his parents. Raymond is survived by his children, Monica and Wiliam Mains, and Raymond and Lisa Lender. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Elissa and Frank Scillieri, Eric and Christina Mains, Jeffrey and Lyndsey Lender, and Kelly and Ryan LaCanna. Raymond (Pop-Pop) was also blessed with 6 great-grandchildren, who will miss him dearly: Samantha, Thomas, Jackson, Joseph, Zachary, and Julia. Raymond’s family is grateful to have had so many years of memories with him.
