Robert “Bob” Boyle, age 91, of Pompton Plains, New Jersey, and formerly of Wayne, passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2026.
Born and raised in Kingston, New York, Bob was the eldest of Robert and Helen Boyle’s three sons. He attended Mount St. Michael’s High School in the Bronx, then Holy Cross, and graduated from St. Bonaventure University with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He later earned a master’s degree in education from Siena College. Bob began his career teaching biology at the junior high and high school levels in Kingston and then in several other school districts, before settling in Wayne, New Jersey, where he served as Assistant Superintendent of Wayne Public Schools for twenty years.
In the eighth grade, Bob met Ellen O’Reilly. Even as a boy, Bob knew that one day he’d like to marry her. Sure enough, in 1958, the two were married in their hometown of Kingston, New York. The couple eventually settled in Wayne, New Jersey in 1968, where they raised their five children.
Bob was a devoted Yankees fan, and no game was sweeter to him than one that ended with a win over the Red Sox. He also loved boxing, both as a fan and, briefly, as a competitor in his high school days. While Bob never went looking for adventure, he found plenty of it with Ellen by his side. She loved to travel, and he loved her, so together they explored many different places and cultures, taking the two all around the world.
Above all, Bob was a loving husband and a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He supported his family in everything they did and never missed their sporting and special events. He was so proud to watch his children and grandchildren grow and start families of their own. Spending time at Pines Lake with the family was what made Bob the happiest and where many cherished memories were made.
He will be remembered as a friend to all, with an uncanny ability to remember everyone’s name and a little something about them, which earned him the admiration and respect of others in his career and his personal life. Affectionately known as “The Mayor,” he will be dearly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Helen Boyle, and his brothers, John Boyle and his wife, and Edward Boyle.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ellen Boyle; their children: Cece (Raymond) Vanaria of Wayne, New Jersey, Terrence Boyle of West Harwich, MA, Michael Boyle of Summit, New Jersey, Robert Boyle (Ann) of Glen Rock, New Jersey, and Brian Boyle (Christy) of Centreville, Virginia; fifteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, their families, and sister-in-law, Rose Boyle.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105, or online at www.stjude.org.
