Robert M. Capozzi, age 75, of Wayne, NJ, passed away peacefully, with his loving family by his side, on Sunday, September 17, 2023.
Robert was known as Rob or Bob and was affectionately called Grumps by his six grandchildren. Bob was born in the Bronx, NY, to Frank and Lucy Capozzi. He spent most of his childhood in Meriden, CT, where he loved to play in the woods, catch frogs, and competed on his school’s wrestling team. He moved to NJ during his senior year of high school and graduated from South Plainfield High School with the Class of 1966. Bob then graduated from Rider College with a Business degree. He had a successful career as an Operations Manager in Retail and Distribution Management positions and worked for companies such as BASF, Ben Rickert, Lillian Vernon, Liz Claiborn, and Alfred Dunner.
It was at BASF, that Bob met the love of his life, Marie. Their first date was to Nanina’s in the Park in Bellville. They married at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Plainfield in 1980 and lived in Wayne for the past forty years.
Bob was known for his dry, sarcastic sense of humor, funny stories, and his helpful, matter-of- fact advice. He inherited his creative passion for building from his grandfather, and his love of cars, pets, listening to music, and for the NY Giants from his father. Cooking was a hobby that both Bob and Marie shared, and Bob held the honorary title of “Grill Master” and “Chief Panini Maker.” Their culinary skills and hospitality at gatherings were genuinely appreciated by their friends and family. Bob possessed a businesslike mindset and loved to be the “project manager” of many home remodeling and building projects in their two homes. He was often teased that even though he could not swim, they owned homes by the lake and the ocean. He loved to refinish furniture and do woodwork and showered his family with unique handmade gifts that he either repurposed or built from scratch. There will always be cherished memories of family dinners, attending car shows, Cruise Night in Asbury Park with his wife Marie and his brother Martin.
Bob was given a second chance at life when he received a heart transplant 10 years ago at Newark Beth Israel Hospital which was something for which he was truly grateful. Bob liked to quote “Everything will be alright in the end, so if it’s not alright, it’s not the end.”
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Marie Capozzi; his two daughters from a previous marriage, Elizabeth Morris and her husband, Pete, from PA and Alison Halko and her husband, Roman, from CA; his six grandchildren: Abigail Morris, Melanie Halko, Kristen Halko, Jacob Morris, Jayden Halko, and Jacob Halko; his brother, Martin Capozzi, from NJ and his loyal dog, Lulu.
