Ronald A. Luchejko, age 70 of Wayne, died at home at Wednesday, April 5, 2017. He was the owner of Ronnie’s Car & Truck Sales on Hamburg Turnpike for nearly twenty years.

Ronnie grew up in Wallington, NJ and graduated high school in 1964. Shortly after graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army and headed to Vietnam. His time in Vietnam was essentially typical, which means he did things and saw things that no teenage boy should ever experience and Ronnie was haunted for the rest of his life. Ronnie was always very private about such things and few people knew this side of him. He battled with PTSD, he struggled to get adequate treatment through the V.A., and then when cancer began to appear, there was little anyone could do. Over the years though, Ronnie found some of the best support ever at the Garfield VFW post 2867. Here, along with fellow veterans who were battling the very same demons, Ronnie found comfort. It is those friends who helped get him through his darkest days, and Ronnie’s family is grateful to each and every one of those veterans.

After his discharge, Ronnie worked in construction for a short while, but he loved working on cars. He eventually owned a body shop in Garfield and then he started buying and selling cars. He opened his own car lot; Ronnie’s Car & Truck Sales on Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne and he has been operating there since 2001.

In his free time, Ronnie enjoyed spending time at their beach house at the Jersey Shore. With his family, he would go boating, ride their wave runners, or go fishing off the beach. Hunting in Pennsylvania was also a favorite pastime in the fall. Ronnie also loved to go antiquing and he collected more than he probably should have. In recent years, he loved going to the Goodwill store to see what ‘treasures’ other people had donated there. His wife, Candice, would joke that while Ronnie was shopping in the front of the store, she was around back donating items from his ‘collection.’

Ronnie and his wife Candice (Tabor) met while in high school. She was much younger than Ronnie and used to follow him around everywhere he went. Like a typical teenage boy, Ronnie did everything to avoid her. But after he returned from Vietnam, Candice was all grown up, and the two of them began dating, and dating, and dating. More than ten years went by (Ronnie was known to be a little bit stubborn) before they finally married on January 23, 1977 at Holy Ascension Ukranian Orthodox Church in Clifton. They had planned to honeymoon in Jamaica, but the citizens were rioting at the time, so they detoured to Hawaii instead. After returning home, they settled in West Orange, NJ before moving to Wayne in 1979. They raised their two wonderful children together and their marriage has endured for nearly forty years. Ronnie wasn’t the easiest man to live with, Candice will confess, but they stood by each other and she took care of him as best as she could. Candice and her children will miss Ronnie dearly.

Ronnie is survived by his wife, Candice, of Wayne, two children; Daria Leidig and her husband Sean of Kinnelon, NJ, and Ronald, Jr. of Wayne, one granddaughter; Sienna Leidig of Kinnelon, and his three beloved Yorkies; Cameron, Sydney, and Sadie.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the Garfield VFW Post 2867, 340 Outwater Lane, Garfield, NJ 07026 would be appreciated.
