It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald Elmer Andersen, age 87, of Pompton Plains, New Jersey. He died on October 21, 2026, in the comfort of the amazing care team at Cedar Crest Village.
Ronald was born in Jersey City in 1939 to Elsie née Bondy and Oscar Andersen. He grew up in Teaneck and graduated from Teaneck High School in 1957.
Ron is remembered by all for his quick wit and his perpetual yearning to get a smile or a laugh from those whom he met. As he told us, his mom taught him to “light up a room with your presence”, so he always led with a joke. He had a repertoire of 80 plus years of one-liners and stand-up comedy material that could rival any TV comedian. His gift of humor will stay with us always.
Ron met Betsy Kopp, the love of his life, at age 1. His grandmother and Betsy’s grandmother were best friends, so Ron and Betsy were placed in the crib together at family picnics. Betsy shared that in her early teens, she always dreamed of marrying Ron. After their high school graduations, the two families were vacationing near each other in Wildwood, N.J. They happened to meet up during an evening walk on the boardwalk, and Betsy and Ron started dating. They married in 1959 and honeymooned in Miami, Florida. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage prior to her passing in 2023.
Ron and Betsy began their family in East Paterson and moved to Wayne in 1969, where they raised their boys Ronald (Ron) and Robert (Bob). Together with Betsy’s mom and grandfather, they lived four generations together for many years. Ron and Betsy were both only children, but somehow the home was always filled for the holidays with family friends. So much that the ping pong table top was always required in the dining room so that everyone had a place to sit.
Ron, Bob, and all six grandchildren recall that Grandpa never missed one of their games or events. He was our greatest fan, win or lose. From hot summer ball games and swim meets to standing on the snow for ski races, Grandpa was always there supporting.
Ron had followed in his father Oscar’s footsteps to become a union electrician in New York City, where he commuted and worked for 40 years. In the 1980’s, he saw the personal computer age developing in New York offices and elected to move into tele-com and data work in lieu of traditional electrical power work. His personality and leadership skills helped him become a General Foreman for Forrest Electric whom he finished his career with. He led hundreds of men on critical office buildouts in the World Financial Center and was responsible to make sure all systems were on-line for the daily trading sessions. After his retirement, Betsy went back to work for Bob’s company and Ron helped her with her filing and communications for another 17 years.
He had a passion to help others and serve the community. Ron was a Boy Scout leader and served on the Board of Trustees of the Wayne PAL for many years. For the PAL, he was a coach, a baseball league commissioner, a bingo caller, and the golf outing master of ceremonies in addition to his Trustee role. He cherished the friends he made there and the impact that the PAL had on the kids in Wayne.
Ron and Betsy were avid bowlers and country dancers. They loved to travel and share more than fifty years of memories from traveling throughout the United States and Europe and on many cruises, almost all with their friends Lois and Matt Marakovitz. Ron loved golfing, gardening, a good nap and any time that he could spend with the grandkids.
Ron is survived by his son Ronald and his wife Theresa née Werns of Kinnelon and their children Brian, Meghan, and Sean; his son Robert (Bob) and his wife Andrea née Rittenhouse of Wayne and their children Erica, Valerie, and Christopher.
Memorial donations to the Wayne PAL, 1 Pal Drive, Wayne NJ 07470, would be greatly appreciated.
