Ronald A. Tierney, age 75, of Wayne, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 11, 2021.
Ron was born and raised in Paterson, NJ and lived in Wayne, NJ for the last 44 years. While a student at Eastside High School in Paterson, Ron ran cross country and was a graduate of the Class of 1963.
Ron started his career in law enforcement in 1970. He dedicated 32 years of service to the Paterson Police Department and retired as a Police Captain in 2002.
One day while at work, Ron pulled over a young lady named Maria Vega. It may have been because he liked her car – a 1967 blue Chevy Chevelle. He pursued her for six months before she agreed to a first date at Gino’s, a fast food restaurant right on the corner of Haledon Ave. and Halsey Ave. in Haledon. They married on Saturday, May 21, 1977 at Our Savior Lutheran Church on Broadway in Fair Lawn. They held a small reception at the home they purchased on 20 Edith Court in Wayne and later honeymooned in Acapulco, Mexico.
Several years after getting married, Ron and Maria were blessed with the birth of their precious daughter Lindsey. Ron’s life would never be the same. His daughter Lindsey was his little angel and he often referred to her as the apple of his eye. Ron and Maria built a new home in Wayne and moved the family in 1985 to their present home.
Ron was a self-made craftsman who enjoyed working around the house. Over the course of the past thirty-seven years, he completed several renovation projects within the home. His yard was meticulous and he was always doing handy-man projects. He could figure out the way to fix just about anything, even if he had to take something apart and put it back together.
Throughout his life, Ron really enjoyed cars, especially cars from the 1950’s and 60’s. He loved going to car shows and as recently as one month ago, he enjoyed the day being with his family while touring the Saratoga Automobile Museum in Saratoga Springs, New York. On this trip, the family also visited the site of the Woodstock Music festival in Bethel Woods, which Ron attended in 1969. He loved watching police and crime investigation shows on television and going to Atlantic City with Maria. Ron would hit the beach while Maria hit the casinos.
Above all else, Ron cherished time spent with his family the most. When she was a little girl, Ron and Maria would take Lindsey to Disney World a couple of times every year. They took vacations together to Cancun, the Dominican Republic and closer to home to his parent’s home near the beach in Manahawkin when they were living there. More recently, the family celebrated Ron and Maria’s fortieth wedding anniversary on a trip to San Francisco and Hawaii.
He lived every day for his wife and daughter. Ron was a kind and loving man with a great sense of humor and a love for making family and friends laugh at his jokes. He was a wonderful husband, father and a great friend to all who knew him.
Ron is survived by his beloved wife Maria (nee Vega) to whom he was blessed with a marriage that spanned 44 years, his adored daughter Lindsey Widmayer and husband Andrew, his brother Jack Tierney and wife Barbara, his sister-in-law Genoveva Tierney, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John Tierney and Bessie (nee Kievet) and his brother Robert Tierney.
