Russell Compesi, age 82 of Wayne, died suddenly on Tuesday, September 18, 2007.
He was born in Lodi and graduated from Lodi High School with the class of 1941. He went on to join the United States Navy and served in the Pacific theatre on a submarine, the USS Chub; SS 329. Chub received three battle stars for WWII service after completing three successful war patrols and is credited with having sunk a total of 4,200 tons of shipping. Russell was awarded the American Theatre Medal, the Victory Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Medal for his service during the war.
After the war he married Concetta and they lived in Wood Ridge, NJ for 6 years before moving to Wayne 49 years ago.
Russ played golf in his younger years. He also enjoyed playing poker, especially on trips to Atlantic City. He was a ‘big’ Yankees fan and enjoyed watching the Giants and Knicks too.
Russ was truly a “family man”. Family dinners and holiday celebrations were an especially treasured time for him. He was a devoted and loyal husband and father. His children describe him as being “honest, kind, compassionate, loving, and sensitive”. His family was the most important thing in his life; second to nothing else.
He and his wife enjoyed 59 years of “beautiful” marriage together; they were “best friends”.
Surviving are his wife, Concetta (DeBonis), two sons; Gary and his wife JoAnn Compesi of Wayne, and Alan Compesi of Wayne; one daughter Eileen Lehault and her husband Bill; and five grandchildren: Michael Lehault and his wife Allison of Chadwick Beach, NJ, Christopher Lehault of Brooklyn, NY, William B. Lehault III of Wayne, and Jenna Compesi and Philip Compesi, both of Wayne. He was predeceased by one brother, James Compesi in 2006. His father, Philip passed in 1995 and his mother Nancy (Pignatore) died in 1998.
