Sebastian G. Basart, age 34, of New York City, passed away peacefully on December 7th, 2017, after a short battle with brain cancer, in the presence of his loving and caring family.

Sebastian was born to Monique Arends and Martin Basart. He and his family lived in Rye, NY until Sebastian was about five years old. Eventually his family moved to Kinnelon, NJ where he would spend his formative years growing up. As a child Sebastian was what you might call an overactive child. His mom and dad could barely keep up with him. His parents gave him the nickname “Apie”, which when translated from Dutch means, “monkey”. They would go outside looking for Sebastian and when he couldn’t be found his mom would “look up”. She often found that he had climbed up a tree which he was exceptionally good at. Sebastian was the most influential person of his brother Alex’s life. He will always be his inspiration.

As a teenager in High School, his charismatic personality fostered such an energy that it allowed him to build an extended family of lifelong friends He participated in many sports and activities while in school and particularly enjoyed swimming. He followed his love for swimming and as a teenager he obtained his first job as a lifeguard. Following his graduation from Kinnelon High School with the class of 2001, Sebastian attended William Paterson University where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Arts in 2006.

Sebastian followed the Basart family legacy in the record industry. Coupled with his passion for music, he embarked upon his career at Sony Music Entertainment.

He was at Sony for approximately six years until his promotion lead him to his current position: Manager, A&R Administration Columbia Records in Manhattan.

Shortly before Sebastian became ill, he met a young woman by the name of Elisa Araujo through a mutual friend. After several dates they grew to love each other. When Sebastian relayed the news to Elisa that he had become ill, she embraced his battle and never left his side. She cared for him and loved him unconditionally. Their connection and love for each other will carry on forever.

Sebastian was very spiritual. Meditation and yoga were positive forces in his life, which guided him to lead a healthy lifestyle. Traveling was another passion that took him all over the world: Brazil, Europe, Costa Rica and Iceland to name a few.

Sebastian was a kind-hearted, generous, humble and modest person who touched the lives of many people. His family remembers an incident when he had lost his wallet in New York City. The New York Transit Police found his wallet and returned it to him with nothing missing, including fifty dollars in cash. Sebastian decided to give the money to a homeless man on the street.

Unfortunately, he was taken from his family and friends too soon and will be missed by everyone that knew him and he will remain in our hearts for all eternity.

Sebastian is survived by his mother Monique Arends and her husband Max Munzer of Butler NJ, his father Martin Basart and his wife Kathleen Basart of Sebastian, FL, his brother Alex Basart of Sebastian, FL., girlfriend Elisa Araujo, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews who live overseas as well as his many friends who were family to him.
