Stephen Sakovits of Wayne, New Jersey, passed away on April 18, 2020 at the age of 90. Stephen is survived by his son Steven, daughter-in-law Barbara, his daughter Christine, son-in-law Robert, and grandchildren Matthew, Amanda and Caroline. Stephen was predeceased by his wife Theresa, his sister Rose, and his brothers John and Louis.
Stephen was born on June 30, 1929, to his parents John and Rosalia on a farm in Szentpéterfa, Hungary. As a young man Stephen rebelled against the Communist government in Hungary by smuggling individuals oppressed because of their religion or ethnicity across the border to Austria. After having spent time in a Hungarian military work camp, Stephen decided to leave his parents behind, escape from behind the Iron Curtain and he fled under gun fire across the border to Austria.
After spending a brief time in Austria, Stephen followed his brothers and immigrated to the United States, living in New York City for a period. He met his future wife Theresa a few years later and moved to New Jersey to raise a family; first living in Elmwood Park and then Wayne, New Jersey.
Stephen loved his work as a layout man for Tolan Machinery building stainless steel tanks for pharmaceutical and food processing companies across the United States and for NASA in support for the Apollo space program. Stephen was a devoted family man, he enjoyed watching a good soccer game, loved to work around the house and in his garden.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Alzheimer's Association in the memory of Stephen Sakovits at http://act.alz.org/goto/stephen_sakovits.
